Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' bending

Post by oZmonKey »

This isn't how the zig zag starts is it? I fear it's from the powerful wind around here:

Also happening in Harbin Inversa:

I would guess it's the bends they get , wind has a bad habit of just snapping them. Spectabilis breaks in wind more than any other Bamboo I've known. Markj was saying he has lost half his new Spectabilis to wind this Spring. On the other hand Brad says it's his best Bamboo at the moment and it's the one Jos has in front of the nursery in Holland. A very underrated Bamboo and should be one of the first Bamboos for a collector .
Always experimenting to get Timber Bamboos Timber size :-)

That is how they do it, it is called genuflection as on bended knee, that tip will keep pointing toward the ground and then it will rise back up but often they'll abort - but yep, you are seeing zig-zags being made.

yep I think so!

I haven't been growing spectabilis for very long (2nd shooting season for it). Looks like I have 2 crooked culms, pretty cool!

Very windy here today too :| can't do anything about it other than hope for the best.

That is totally how they start, saw it happen for the first time last year, absolutely amazing!

My spectabilis almost did 90 degrees before it straightened out ,hope it happens again.

Just started shooting, spectabilis is really starting to get going, aureosulcata seems a little slower.

Mine haven't zagged back yet. I'd love to capture a time lapse video of that happening.

I was going to post that my Spectabilis hasn't done this before, but then I checked and there's a doozy of a bend happening right now. :)
