Old culm producing new leaves right after division taken

Post by stevelau1911 »

After one of the 8ft bicolor divisions was taken off a few weeks ago, one interesting thing I found was that the old culm born back in 2011 is starting to re-leaf again despite a gradual decline through this year. Is this because that old culm was getting too shaded out, or could it have been getting choked out by the 2013 culm?

Anyways, I find this to be very interesting because it was on the verge of withering away a month ago, but now it is rejuvenating. Other culms are oddly starting to resume their leaf growth too on top of the rhizome growth which will hopefully be enough to push the late shoot on this plant.

Here's a close up showing the obvious increase in leaf growth.

I know it will probably never return to the amount of foliage it had last year, as 2nd year culms tend to be the most heavily leaved, but it's cool to see that it can still contribute being on its 3rd year.

Here's a picture of it a year ago, and it's the tall culm in front of the barrel on the right.
