Pleioblastus maculatus pushing like mad as well
Borinda f. White Cloud made it through winter. a few small shoots starting to come up. new leaves are striking.
time for more mulch

First of the bigger plants to get going are these. Sizing up on the B. dissimulator is fantastic:

Looks good, what is your climate zone? Pretty broad range of species there!

I think we technically fall under 9b. I have quite a few other big'uns that I am hoping will size up accordingly this year. Seems like B. dissimulator was the first to blow. B. gibba is a relatively new arrival from down in Tucson, and was shooting (barely) when it got here. Glad it didn't get disturbed when I planted it. I've had others do that, or get stunted for literally months before they picked up again.needmore wrote:DesertDweller wrote:First of the bigger plants to get going are these. The montane bamboo are a last attempt to see if I can limp 'em through our summer heat. Got some healthy plants that had just arrived at the nursery and put them in the best shade spots I had. We'll see what happens.
Hopefully more pics to come. My B. oldhamii put up a big cane starting at the end of March last year, so we'll see if anything happens now. Eyes peeled!

Re: Boo-Shoots 2016
Around 15 cm of wet snow devastated most if not all the smaller Moso shoots. All the tall shoots got smashed by the weight of wet snow that flattened the bamboos to the ground. Same with Rufa, I don't think there are many shoots that survived undamaged. Spectabilis started to shoot late enough to only have some minor damage, the tallest shoots were only a bit twisted, they don't seem to be broken.

Hispida looks right on those shoots, a really nice bamboo. I thought the one I brought to CA was dead but it pushed 5 tiny shoots from a bare rhizome so I'm hopeful it will take off again.zxylene wrote:I really like the shoots on this one I can't remember what it is might be Phyllostachys hispida

Well, snow is melting away, I'll see tomorrow what the white crap brought. Well it brought nothing, what it took would be better choice of words.
Snow in such amount happens every 10 to 20 years around here. This year, it got really warm and we haven't had any real winter, which means everything restarted early in the season and snow did a lot of damage around here. I'm sure the bamboos will be the first to recover tho

Tarzanus,
I really doubt that your shoot damage will matter all that much in the big scheme of things. In upstate NY, there are cold winters, but there will also be winters where bamboos don't get much damage. Even on a winter like last winter, the overall energy in the groves is likely trending upwards as they gain more and more biomass.
You also appear to have a very vigorous moso seedling so you may end up with lots of stunted or short leafy culms this year, but the energy absorbed will still set you up for even more bigger shoots the following spring. You may need to get one of Mschaffer's setups for the late freezes.
I'm hoping my moso bicolor which should be a bit recovered this year holds off on shooting for at least another 3 weeks to avoid your issues.

My Spectabilis is growing crazy. That one rhizome grew about 8 feet long and like 20 shoots. They are really really reddish purple now from the sun. Some more shoots coming up even bigger in the middle of the original plant.
Bissettii with about 30 shoots. Those are from the smaller one. The bigger one is only getting some shoots inside. Don't know why that one is shooting later and not spreading out. Maybe it will eventually come up all over too.
I'll take some of the decora when they get taller. But they are getting tons and tons of shoots. Some fat ones. And they are super super dense. I can't believe how many come up. Dozens come up in spots and they are like 1/2 inch from each other. You can see some in the back of the Bissettii shot.

Bissettii in front and way back up top there you can see some Decora shoots.
