I sent a division of Sasaella masamuneana 'Aureostriata' to Georgia a couple years back and last year he told me his was flowering. Noticed this AM that mine which I cut back, is heavily flowering on new culms.
In the ABS auction I think 2014?, I bought an imported bamboo but I forget the name given, it was a new name to me. The next year all of the new growth looked to me just like S m Aureostriata - different looking than when it arrived but gold edged sasa-like leaves. Checked it this AM...flowering.
Bill - do we have auction records for past 2-3 years? I'd be curious to see what it was named when I bought it. This guy came out of USDA misnamed for sure.

Re: Flowering
I will look at what records I have. I tried to back away from the ABS auctions because of the time I was putting in but I should still have the records for on-line winners and plants.
I entered your info into the flowering records.
Do you have photos of the flowers?
Thank You,
Bill

Re: Flowering
No but I'll work on getting some, I suspect that if I wait a couple of weeks there will be lots of them.
Thanks Bill.
Thanks Bill.

Re: Flowering
I have 3 pots of it flowering now, two were from my patch but the 3rd was a recent auction plant in a different genus I think. A mix up in shipping from China or USDA.
Did you get any seed Fred?

Re: Flowering
I can harvest a few if you want them. I just dumped several 1 gals of misc seeds.
My bang for the buck on seeds is so pitiful and cleanup from this winter is so huge that I'm throwing in the seed towel. Having played around with seeds for a few years, knowing how flowering was initiated is crucial - was it stress or the end of a species cycle. I have had several plants flower but seeds were inert and plants continued to spread shoots. The only "winner" was a confirmed end of species cycle. It's a muddy (ref my 82 inches of rain) game. The science seems paltry and the seed vendors ... It would be interesting to have the website ask some nurseries for their experiences with seeds. Also - follow up on flowering re the website alert would be interesting - did the plant continue to shoot after the alert? Rgds

Re: Flowering
Just a couple of more inputs/observations re seed development:
Nitida flowered several years ago, yet mine never flowered and has produced healthy progeny on a yearly basis. PH. elegans and PH. glauca y. shoot and flower every year, yet the flowers/seeds are inert. How can natural adaptation and/or local/area nursery propagation change a species? How do we get more science into the website? RGds
