Unexpected
I planted my third type of bamboo 6 weeks ago, phyllostachys nigra, I thought it was just quietly settling in, but when I took a closer look yesterday I was amazed to see a new culm has shot up, four times thicker than the existing stems and already nearly as tall as them. And there are several shorter, but thick culms appearing. I had no idea bamboo grows like this. My other bamboos have started to grow taller after a few years, but not much thicker. I expect this is all quite commonplace to you lot, but it is new to me and I find it fascinating.

I think it might have something to do with the age of the mother plant that the divide come from ,I had 3 Phyllostachys Aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis ' delivered incorrectly but they let me keep them so I planted them and like yours the shoots are 4-5 times bigger than the original culms ,I have 32 different bamboos and not had this before from a young plant
