Seeking help choosing a species for a small homestead...

Post by jsavage »

First post! Forgive my bamboo naïvety. :) We are in the process of purchasing 1 to 2 acres for a small homestead (hopefully more but planning on 1 to 2). I’ve been hearing good things about bamboo over the last few years and so I’m beginning my research into this plant. I first thought it might make a great crop to sell, but from what I’ve gathered so far, it’s probably not the best crop for us to farm on such a small ploy of land. We may end up doing some potted plants once we get into the groove.

Anyway, I’m very interested in growing some at least for our own use on the homestead to build fences, etc. We’re right on the border of zones 7a and 6b. I’m wondering if anyone can recommend a good bamboo species that will not run into neighbors yards, grow thick enough to be used to build things (2” diameter or thicker), and do well in the climate here. I’ve found a lot of species that mention zone 6, but they are all smaller diameter. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
