Not for Phyllostachys. From time to time if the weather is funky, they can do that. I saw second shooting later in the season due to severe frost in the winter and after the drought one year. Either could be coincidence, but I think it did trigger second shooting. Shoots were around previous year's size.
I guess someone with higher bamboo mileage will be able to give you better answer.

Thanks Tarzanus I have over 50 different bamboos mostly Phyllostachys and late summer shooting is quite normal but I was pleasantly surprised to see the two bambusoides sending out 10 big shoots, I have shoots on my other Phyllostachys but there either whips or normal size shootsTarzanus wrote:Not for Phyllostachys. Have you any photos you can post of the Allgold, especially of the foliage?

I'm curious to learn if the heavy variegation on mine is 'normal', not that there is a normal. Mine has nice variegation on every leaf, some leaning towards apricot colored.

It's funny because when I was up my nursery taking the pictures of allgold I noticed that two of my juvenile Vivax Aureocaulis had some really nice white stripes on there leafs in fact more than the allgold which my bigger Vivax Aureocaulis don't have which is strange

There are 2 photos of it in this thread, under the Robert Young photos, I can try more but you get the idea with these. Click on the photos, they get bigger.

Brad they look great how big is the plant? Any ideas why my Vivax would have the white stripes? My Castillonis has more white/cream stripes then my allgold but it is a older plant

The plant was a potted bamboo rescue I did last summer, not much dirt, nearly dead - it recovered quite well and is still in a pot, in the 8' tall range looking quite pleased.
I can't speak to your Vivax, mine were never variegated.

strange about the Vivax maybe there not Vivax after all will have to look at shoots and plant more closely or if they are correct maybe a variegated Vivax that would be excitingneedmore wrote:The plant was a potted bamboo rescue I did last summer, not much dirt, nearly dead - it recovered quite well and is still in a pot, in the 8' tall range looking quite pleased.

Re: Is it normal to get big shoots this time of the year
Normally I'd ignore variegation on a young plant but my Allgold seems intent on maintaining it - thus far anyway. Castillon I would understand as it flowered and the new gen could variegate, perhaps that is what I have I've been assuming it is Allgold, not named when I acquired it.
Maybe your Vivax will grow out of it but as you suggests perhaps it is something else.
