They look lovely with the wet boulders. How do you keep the latter so clean? J1 looking especially fine.

I agree with johnw. It looks great. I thought I had done my research when I planted the variety 'Pingwu' in the fall 2015, when the species 'Campbell' would have been a better option for the site. I'm giving it another year to "straighten up" its act.

I haven't done anything other than brush away pine needles, usually just raking them under the rocks. 20 years ago used to be a water feature stream with pond at bottom that was abandoned due to attracting wildlife.
Bears, coyotes, deer, and racoons have a trail right behind crassinodus. Saw a bear run across street in front of me in neighborhood while walking Tues. morning.

I chose 'Pingwu' for the light color of the leaves to contrast with 'Scabrida' when they intermingle later.
Yours has grown up faster, does look like a pretty tight space there.

Here are a couple pics of an upright 'Pingwu' at local nursery.

The planting looks good now. Release the Acer! (if that's what it is). I'd say my Robustas have matured in thickness and height faster than Pingwu, but without the spread. Kimmei's catalogue says,"'Pingwu' Looks a little Farg. robusta 'Campbell' but it grows bigger and wider..." Anyhow, the comparisons have been had elsewhere, I'm sure. I'm just umming and ahing whether it should stay or go.

I must say, it is hard for us to imagine sharing our garden enviroment with bears! I'm assuming it is the Black bear and not the Grizzly. If they suddenly turned up, houseplants would suddenly become interesting.

Iain - I suspect you'll be rather chuffed when your 'Pingwu' looks like this. Wind-borne kindly sent me this screen shot last year.

john
24C, sunny, feels like 30c w. the humidity.

Bloody hell. That tractor really puts it into perspective! I think I underestimated the potential eventual size. :)

Cheers John.

Still trying to get a feel for how the 'Scabrida' will develop as I want the maple close to rock stream yet not squashed, is very much a dwarf. Did make me nostalgic for April…

Makes sense. I thought it might have been potted because it's a juvenile and placed under cover in winter. It's a nice plant. And you've got the autumn colour.

I heard Acers grow in acid soil but nowadays many of them are grafted.
