Good suggestions, I'm relying on the mounds though for those tough digs. My largest bamboo in Indiana consisted of potted divisions dropped on concrete, then soild dump around them and a raised bed slowly built. That grove exceeded 2.7" diameter by 35 feet, never blew over and was mostly fine in the cold. Similar setup in Nor Calif should do well.

That's my plan. I dug the last 15 holes for Contracta in February and won't do it again. Planning to put 16 Seabreeze and 1 Cool Buddha – Bambusa Tuldoides in the ground this Feb/Mar and I will be purchasing an auger. It can break your back if you don't pace yourself, but it is much easier than the Home Depot shovel, I'm not sure about the Wolverine.
