Have a deteriorated #7 pulp pot that I thought I could still pick up but found out otherwise as lip broke off and pot collapsed after a few inch drop. Used velcro tape to reattach lip but have about 4 big slits around pot so need to move forward. Was planning on dividing soon but we have freezing lows forecast for the next few days so will probably wait till after. Actually was planning on dividing last Oct. but about 100 new shoots came up in Sept. to throttle my plans. Want to divide into 2 large and 2 small divisions.
Question is about thinning or topping or just letting nature decide. Was dense growth last year and with all the new shoots would like to proceed before new growth begins mid March if similar to past.

I'd just divide it, some of the culms on the divided edges of divisions will die back after you make the cuts anyway, remove them after you see what has died back. You can always thin more later if it looks water stressed. Usually not a problem with little clumpers.
