The Fargesia scabrida has always been my earliest shooting Bamboo. Despite this cold recent event here on the Island it has been a warm late winter. Scabrida started shooting two weeks ago but very very slowing.

Well, you sent me out to look for 'Scabrida' shoots as they are usually first here too. Mine still barely breaking surface, did see 5 here though…

The scabrida I planted in Fall of last year is shooting, too! Just one for now. It was a pretty stressed division. Hopefully there are more shoots on the way.

Rufa is shooting, too, in its third season. Lots more shoots, but this one was the easiest to photograph.

Fargesia sp. 'Scabrida' just shooting now. It had a few fried leaves at the top caused by an extremely brief low of 0F back in late December. Best rated at +5F as it did not like 0F though it has tolerated that without burn in the past. No tip damage.

Looking fairly good though. For me it has the quintessential bamboo look so a favourite.

john,
Is that the "Scabrida' that was over 3 m last year?

Sorry wind-borne I missed your post. Yes that's the same one.

And here is the 'Scabrida' yesterday. Lost some top leaves last winter but no stem damage. The lowest temp was 7F. No snow and constant cold with many lows to 12F and rarely above freezing for 2 months; the ground froze down a yard. The winds were brutal and persistent, spring started just 2 weeks ago. It's been hell.

This is proving to be an extremely beautiful bamboo. Copuld itt be the best Fargesia?

Here growing in full sun on the coast. Close to 10-11ft tall; the topography is deceptive as that green stake on the edge of a slope, 3ft above where the 'Scabrida' is planted.

Looking good john…

Mine looks a bit odd for a 'Scabrida' at the moment as leaves are just beginning to fill and the lower buds opening to refill the bottoms after cleanup last year.

soon after removing ~150 old culms that were forcing a severe diagonality( intentionallty sic).

Positive side effect is the first shoots this year are decidedly
more upright.
