I'm pretty new too, but my assumption would be immature plant and or rhizomes breaking the surface and turning into culms (whip shoots). It's hard to see in the picture for me what's going on.

More of my rubro shoot, the first pic is last night, and the second in 24 hours later, and it's exactly a week old now. I promise it's not the angle either, the cage is crooked, but the tape is accurate at 7.5" last night and 9" today...and that means it's averaging over an inch a day.

I could not be more happy with this guy so far!

Boy, your Y maculata looks strikingly like my H porcatus, dark wine shoots with vertical striping? Foliage similar as well, makes me wonder if mine might be misnamed. Could be that there are just similarities among the montane forms, I'm unfamiliar with them.

Now there's a pretty boo!!...beautiful colors, and I love the dark new shoots...

The culm sheath leaves on maculata are long from the get go How is your ex-'Scabrida' Yushania? doing?

Those bottom two photos look like mine are those all from Chris' site?

My mystery bamboo - I have two - the one in shade is thriving lush and happy and angry at me in full all day sun a bit pale, sometimes curled but shooting and not curled out of the sun.

The other attachments are my maculata shown as contrast.

There is a major difference of growth habit. porcatus is a tight clumper and maculata a long neck clumper.

That shoot of Chris matches mine and mine seems to have very short rhizome necks.

12 days on my rubro shoot, just about to mark 24", moving along nicely.

And I don't care how small it is, my spectabilis that has been in the ground as long as the rubro (5 weeks exactly today) is making a beautiful shoot!

My potted (purchased last September as 1g plant, moved up to 3g) H.T. 'shiroshima' has been shooting this week. There are somewhere between 5 and 7 new shoots, and and 3-5 (some overlap) low branches coming up. These things are gorgeous!...definitely glad I chose it. They may not upsize, but there will be some the same, and it started with 3 culms so way more numerous.

As a side note it seems to have done just fine spending the winter inside with florescent lighting. I was worried about it not shooting properly without a chill. (Hard to get reliable PRECISE information on such things). This, the japonica, and my viridistratus, I can say for sure will shoot fine in the spring after at least one winter indoors. My Sasa veitchii is still very slow to wake up from the same treatment.

I'm also loving my rubro shoot, the suntan is beautiful. I love how I can see sunny and cloudy stretches of days, and speed of growth in the striping. It's exactly 2 weeks old today and just passing 29.5", so still right around 2" a day. The weather for next weeks should be 70's day and mid 50's night so I'm hoping it picks up some speed for its last week's of growth. Regardless it'll be double the diameter of the original culm...possibly approaching 1/2". And if it tops 7 or 8 feet it'll be a sight to behold in my yard...lol.

Also, my spectabilis shoot is almost 4" tall!

My rubro shoot was 17 days old in this picture with the tape...almost 4 feet, today (19 days) it's chin height, I'm 6'1" so well over 5 feet. Two culm sheaths have dropped down low today (haven't found my calipers but looks ~1/2" a foot up) and the next is encasing a branch and leaning way back. I can see branch tips poking above the next few sheath leaves.

Any guesses how much longer it will grow vertically? Another foot would pass the previous culms leaning top, two feet would be taller than that culm if it wasn't leaning over, anything else will just be icing on the cake...lol. Lewis bamboo for the win!

3 weeks yesterday now 69", it was 29.5" last week so 40" this week! The lower 4 or 5 culm sheaths have dropped and I gave it a measure about a foot up, it's a solid 7/16", so a nice increase from the 1/4" culm it came with..

In addition, my spectabilis is up to 4 new shoots/culms. Ranging from under 3/16" to just maybe 1/4", plus what looks to be a rhizome tip about 8" away from the planting that has poked up. So everything seems happy so far.
