Comparison of Shanghai 3 and dulcis shoots.

Post by David »

The S3 began shooting about 2 weeks before the dulcis. These two groves are about 200' apart and in very similar conditions. I wish I could put the pictures side by side, but I don't know how or if we can.

David, I'm not sure if your S3 is also from Steve in DC as mine is but everything about mine says Dulcis family and your shoots are essentially identical-the S3 blades at the tip may elongate a bit more. Mine is also doing the classic Dulcis upculm curving, my 3 culm one planted in late Oct has put up 15 new culms, some upsized. Jos has maintained that he considers S3 a form of Dulcis, I know others say Vivax.

In any case it is a fine bamboo.

Hi Deane. I have always been amazed with the variability of shooting times and shoot coloration even regionally.

Hey Brad. My S3 also came from Steve. I am inclined to lean toward the Dulcis relation. The shoots are of S3 are darker, but the shoot markings appear similar to Dulcis. As you mentioned S3 is a fine bamboo. I'm enjoying watching it grow. I'll leave the final ID to the experts, and perhaps DNA.

Hi Deane, Do you have pics of your dulcis shooting? If you didn't get your plant from Bowden Hostas, it would be great to compare with my plant in the thread "P.dulcis?" in the ID forum.

I purchased a fine iridescens plant last year from The Rodings and enjoyed a short but rare conversation about bamboo with Jane. I read they are hosting a Bamboo Society meet later in the year.

I don't know this family firm, but reading their bamboo page make me sick. Too much mistakes in bamboo names looks terrible. If i omit, that species names must have small letters, names like FARGESIA Scabridia (Asian Wonder), PHYLLOSTACHY Aureasulcata, PHYLLOSTACHYS Aurea 'varigata, PHYLLOSTACHYS Hederaclayda ‘Striaght stem’, PHYLLOSTACHYS Lithophilia, PHYLLOSTACHYS Rubramarginata, PLEIOBLASTUS KONGOSAMSIS ‘Aureostriata’ , SASA Kurilensis 'Shimofuris' and many other. Horrible.

I an against TC plants so bamboo specialist who offer them, is very suspected in my eyes.
I am engaged in pages about hardy bamboos in Czech language - http://bambusy.info/.

I am not sure on your point but I can ensure you Andy and Jane are very knowledgeable and very experienced, they work with Kew Gardens and are very good friends with Mick Bell, who if you don’t know is the president of the bamboo society (EBS Great Britain) and wrote a bamboo book (Gardeners Guide to Growing Temperate bamboos ) as for TC plants there not big fans also but have to use them for some landscaping jobs as can’t always get big numbers of the same plant for a job

I don't know what is not clear in my post. I only noticed, that mistakes in names of bamboo on their page are more common than I could expect from bamboo specialists.

PHYLLOSTACHYS Hederaclayda ‘Striaght stem’ for example.

Edinburgh zoo spells "aureosulcata" with an "a," too. Are you going to any of the meets, Deane?

I am not a member, I was thinking of joining European Bamboo Society to receive bambus magazine but I am not sure how I would translate it
