P. aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' -- flowering (I think)

Post by rectangle »

Hello all,
I really hope I am wrong here but I recently special-ordered some Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' plants and I thought some looked really poor and ratty.
After about a week I saw what I suspected were developing seeds... It's been about a month now and when i looked at them closely today I have a really hard time thinking
that this could be anything other than seeds. I hope I am wrong.

Please take a look a the pic and let me know what you think.

I really don't want to lose these plants... and I planted them in line with other spectabilis that I have had for years, I also fear some flowering signal spreading to the other plants.
If these are seeds any thoughts on whether cutting off all developing seeds and flower-looking parts might help to save the plants?

Cheers

Looks like it is flowering. Is it just a few culms, or the whole grove? Sometimes aureosulcatas will send out an odd bloom, or so I have read, this is most likely to happen to stressed plants.

I would leave it be and hope for some viable seed. I don't think cutting off seed reprograms a flowering plant or anything like that, they will probably just try to make more seed.

I have not noticed any flowering in my spectabilis groves, will look out for it now though.

My Spectabilis is also growing normally without flowering. Must be stress induced flowering.

A couple of branches are flowering on one of my plants. Hoping for some viable seed.
