Ps Amabilis (Tonkin Cane) 2018

Post by David »

This Ps. amabilis grove was planted in 2006. Roger Lewis Sr. suggested to me that he considered amabilis to be more hardy than stated in the literature.

The winter of 2018 was the hardest bamboo winter that we have experienced in Middle Tennessee. 4 days below freezing, highs in the 20s, and nights in the single digits with 2 nights going down to -1° F.

The new grow from last year got fried, but many of those canes are putting on new leaves.

The oldest clump is 25' tall. The large cane shown is 1.5" and looks to be exceeding 25'.

The grove is really beginning to spread and it was the smaller newest culms that burned the most. Amabilis will run and make a clump, run and make a clump, and the clumps seemed to fair better than single canes.

The second picture shows the entire grove. the oldest clump is in the background.

I'm thinking Roger was right.

Looks great, thanks for the offer but I have one in-ground here already, I can't wait to see what it does in this climate.

How's your division doing Jason? Mine is putting up shoots about 1/2 the division size that you dug us.

Thanks. I have really enjoyed watching it grow against the odds. I think it would be fun to have a bamboo fly rod built out of Tennessee Tonkin Cane.

Definitely one of bamboos I'd like to try here as well.

Hi Brad mine is still potted and put up a few small shoots. My other smaller one didn't like the cold winter and the heat finished it off a few weeks ago.
we are still debating the move but if we do I will try it in Idaho.

wondering if Sinobambusa intermedia will do ok in 6B/7A ?
Also Semiarundinaria fastuosa good in 6A/7B ?
or just stay with Tonkin Cane since to me its nicer when established ?

My S intermedia went into full flower a few years back, it came from Bamboo Garden. At the same time Pl juxianensis was flowering and I wondered about a mixup as
I did hear of any other S intermedia in flower and it is similar to the Pl juxianensis which was flowering in multiple places.
