Zone 5b vs. Zone 8a

Post by Delbenes »

My friend from Seattle flew in for a visit to Chicago again. A friend of his started growing bamboo in zone 8a Seattle in 2004, like I did in zone 5b Chicago. He said his friend's bamboo is now tree size and at least 3 inches in diameter. Here's a picture of him chuckling at my biggest bamboo, which was a #3 pot of Mississippi Jim's Nuda planted last summer. Three culms this spring, two a little bigger than the original pair of nice size culms. Lots of late season whip shoots up to 10 feet away, too. The other bamboos from 2004 were #1 and #2 pots, and are still not quite as big as this one, which goes to show, start out as big as you can for the littler ones take relatively longer to size up, especially, I suppose, in colder zones. Well, I'm impressed with this growth, though my wife thinks I'm obsessed, and my friend calls Chicago bamboo quaint.
