Hello--

Can anyone assist in identifying this bamboo? I stumbled across it at a disorganized palm tree specialist's nursery. It had been for a specific job that wasn't completed, and had its roots bound in burlap. This seller didn't remember what type it was--he'd procured it for one of his palm tree jobs at an industrial complex--and fortunately for me, it was not 1) a runner; and 2) it has absolutely thrived in my yard, where twice-yearly flooding due to close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico leaves its base under brackish water for a few hours.

In just 3 years it has grown from @5' diameter base to 10' in diameter, and the culms have gone from 15' to 35 feet. The individual diameter of each culm is about 2" or so. When trying to figure out what this bamboo is, I have been told everything from "100% Oldhamii" to "100% Seabreeze." Can anyone opine authoritatively on what my bamboo is?

Thanks

ZZZ I can not tell you what variety it is. We do not have many Semi Tropicals that live in my area. Hopefully someone can chime in.
It is not Oldhamii though that I am certain of. the form does not look upright enough and the leaves are far too small looking as they should be wider and longer.

Greetings Jason--

Thanks for your reply, and I hope all is well along the beautiful Rt 49 there in my home state of California.

I did have a bamboo person stop by and I asked him to take a look at this particular bamboo. He opined that it was not Seabreeze, but rather B. Ventricosa. When I looked it up later on the internet, I see that B. Ventricosa is commonly referred to as Buddha Belly; it definitely isn't that...

49 area is good. Very soggy this year with lots of snow just up the road from me.

i can not grow Ventricosa here but do understand from what I have read that it needs to be stressed to get the bulged/swollen culms

Definitely not B. ventricosa, nor B. oldhamii. While not being able to positively ID it as B. malingensis, even if you hadn't of suggested it, I would have guessed B. malingensis. I've had some B. malingensis have some pretty impressive sized culms. And what I've notice is that the bigger the culm size gets, the more of a bluish effect I get on the culm higher up in the canopy. Plus, the culm sheaths, before they dry and fall off, have somewhat of a peach color to them.

Thanks Roy--

It has been a while since I've checked back here; my apologies. I did have a local bamboo dealer out to my house a week ago or so regarding a separate issue, and when I showed him my "mystery" bamboo that's in question here, he said that it is definitely B. ventricosa.

Now I have no idea what to think!

Looks very different to me. Maybe the green is confusing, so lets take the green out.
