Be good to check the original plant again, the branch pattern high up would be worth noting :D

Here are some pics of dormant root nodes(adventicous, aerial) or whatever one would like to call them, on phyllostachys.

Ph. v. 'robert Young' showing 2 rooted nodes, and 2 dormant root nodes.

Ph. aureosulcata.

Ph. aureosulcata barely developed root nodes about 2 ft up.

Ph. arcana. Sorry about the focus.

David,

Thanks for getting the pictures. Seeing is definitely believing. So the adventitious roots on temperates seem to be more common than I thought.

Those are some powerful pictures. And a surprize to see the root nodes growing like that. Maybe something like a glitch in the DNA.
I am waiting for the thaw to happen here so I can get back and check out the place where I got that plant. The place I got the 'mystery' bamboo is 25 miles away. And we got maybe 3 more days of ice on the roads ....not a good time to be moving around. I'll let you know how it goes.

Roy-
It seems to me that some varieties are more prone to developing root nodes above ground level than others. RY, and Arcana seem particularly adept at this , and aureosulcata brings up a close 3rd. RY makes me wonder if you could air layer a section of culm with dormant buds and eventually be able to remove the section as a separate plant.?

Bill- You better keep it tucked in tight during the big freeze! The front just arrived here this evening, and temps have dropped 25 degrees since morning with considerable more dropping expected. Oh well, It was nice while it lasted.

The first time I took a small division from my Ph. rubromarignata, I followed the rhizome back to the mother plant and found that it started out above ground on the culm as a low branch that had gotten buried. The nodes rooted and the branch became a rhizome. I separated from its mother above ground and potted it up. It did quite well.

Hello Bill.

Has the weather warmed enough there for you to check out the mystery mother plant?

Dear Bill,
Now, in March, has the ice melted?
May we have an update on the mystery bamboo from 25 miles away?
