A fella has a clumper down in Palacios Texas he says came from Viet Nam with the name Luc Truc. My buddy says the culms are appr 4" dia and 35' tall. Shorter internodes at the base. Top is wind tattered. That is all the info he has now other than he is going to get us each a start and see if we can Id it. I hope to have a pic before too long.

And yes, that may be the same one mentioned. I do not know if this is a plant specific term or generic such as we use "Timber" or "Giant" here.

My 15 year old had a friend down the street that his grandfather grew up in Vietnam. I'll see if I can get a any information from him. Of course, even if he knew about the bamboo, getting a name we could pronounce in English might be difficult.

I am always seeking more knowlege about bamboo, correct names, growth habits, etc., but the vast majority of the fun I get out of this plant is the stories and folks that come with them. Please do ask!

Roy I am Mark I am the one Steve is talking about. My Friend who owns the bamboo Luc Truc said it's English translation is Green Bamboo. I do think it is the same as refered to in that article. But my Friend is not a big plant person he just got it for the shoots. Will get pictures as soon as possible.

Mark,

The information I got from the Vietnamese grandfather was that luc truc was a general term meaning green or light blue. Same as what you said. He said that what he remembered was 2 basic bamboos in the area he lived in Vietnam. One had culms about the size of a person's waist, the other one was a large wrist in size and that was the one most people would eat the shoots.

Thanks Roy guess we will have to wait on the pictures. Will try for a clump shot or two with a good shot of the culm bases. Will front and back culm sheath shots help? No shoots on it right now so I can't get one of them. I am hoping to get back there next weekend and dig a couple of small divisions from it. Going to clean up the clump for my friend while I am at it so he will get better shoot production.

Marcat,

Look through the images of B. tuldoides and you will see a good number of images that were taken to try and get images of identify characteristics of B. tuldoides.

http://tinyurl.com/ybsqvj

These are the things I would look at in taking pictures (I listed them primarily from easy to not so easy):

***(Try to have something in your images that will give people a size relationship--a person, shovel, hat, hand, ruler, etc)

1..Clump stance--overall picture of what the clump looks like. Try and get the entire clump in the image.
2..Culms--as you get closer, start taking some pictures of a group of culms
3..Branch complement---where the branches attach to the culm.
4..Leaves--top and bottom.
5..Culm sheaths--front and backsides, if you can find any still in good shape
6..Culm sheath blade
7..Culm sheath auricles

There are other things you could take pictures of, but I'll stop now so as to not discourage you.

When I first asked the Vietnamese grandson to ask his grandfather about Luc Truc, the grandson said my grandfather said "you have it in your backyard". I thought the grandfather was referring to me having bamboo in my backyard, not any specific bamboo. I then sent the printed article to the grandfather and got the answer, translated and relayed to me by the grandson, which I posted above.

I didn't think anything more about it until I saw the post on Bambooplantations forum. Then I remembered the grandfather being in my backyard, about 7 or 8 years ago, and pointing and talking about my B. oldhamii. Of course, I couldn't understand a word he said at that time. Still can't under much of what he says.

From: Bambooplantations forum

The Vietnam NTFP Network lists "luc truc" as the Vietnamese name for
Dendrocalamus oldhami (Monro).
