Not really sure what genus or species this bamboo belongs to. I got a piece from a friends garden about 3 or 4 weeks back. Stays under about 4'-4.5'.
Thanks,
JD

I find it pretty tough to ID this class of bamboos even with shoot comparisons they are too similar. Next to each other you can see differences but alone I can hardly tell, Sasa tsuboiana will generally be a darker bluer green than others and Sasa oshidensis has twisting leaves and can sometimes be ID'd easily.
Here is I latifolius, now at 7' on a few new shoots
Here is I longiaritus now at 6'
These shorter Sasa look different than yours but they look alike here is Sasa hayatae
And Sasa nipponica with some twisty Sasa oshidensis leaves on the right, behind it

Thanks Brad. At least you got it pinned down to Sasa for me , I wasn't sure. Very tough call, they all look very similar to my eye too.

Isn't Brad saying that it could be Indocalamus too? That's what his first two photos show.
May just be a case of waiting a few years and seeing what the overall form looks like.

Thanks Alan, I missed that and for some reason assumed they were all Sasa. Phyllostachys are my main interest, when it comes to Sasa, pseudosasa, Indocalamus and the like I am clueless.

If it is Sasa Palmeta you might think twice before you let it loose in your garden.

Dependable,
I planted it in an area along my fence line between a compacted stone and gravel driveway area and a strip of woods that is between me and the next house down. Wouldn't mind if it went a little wild there.

When it shoots you may get a better idea of the genus, Sasa shoots will be much lighter in color than Indocalamus or Sasamorpha or Sasaella but within the genus they can sure look the same.
