I used to have some Pl. distichus at my old house, but didn't transplant it when I moved. My recollection is that it has small, close-ranked, paired leaves. I went to buy some more at a different -- but usually reliable -- nursery, and the plants labeled as distichus had somewhat larger leaves and looked much more 'open.' When I looked at the pictures in the data base here, I saw both kinds. What I want looks like this:

But what I recently saw at the nursery looks like this:

Can anyone shed any light on this?

RE: Question about Pl. distichus
If they are new shoots, you may have to wait a little bit for it to fill in. I have one in my kitchen window and the majority of the plant looks like "what you want", but one new culm that popped up looks like "what you don't want". My plant has been weak so I can't give a time frame for how long it takes.

RE: Question about Pl. distichus
Rick has a keen eye. I see the same thing here on mine. Here's a shot of new growth on P. distichus...

This plant will eventually display 2-ranked foliage.
Of course mis-ID is always a possibility too.

RE: Question about Pl. distichus
I have a small variegated bamboo that I suspected was a Pl. distichus, but the new growth was looking very different, which was making me question the ID. I was noticing this morning that the leaf pattern is looking more like a Pl. distichus now. Then again, the idea of some salesperson going to all the trouble to carefully trimming a plant to make it look like a Pl. distichus is kind of amusing.

RE: Question about Pl. distichus
I probably will be putting some outside. Bad thing is for us "make ice cubes outside people" by the time the plant starts looking good winter comes and soon thereafter the lawn mower comes out and we start all over.
