Any ideas

Post by Sirius »

Any ideas what this is?

Last summer, it was given to me by a friend who loves gardening but has no clue about bamboos.

It is hardy down to about -3* to -4 *c. Colder than that it gets cut down to the ground, but comes up again each spring and is quite vigorous.
The culms are spaces about 3 or 4 cm apart on thin rhizomes.

Im taking a guess at a type of Fargesia. Maybe Robusta or Scabrida?

Looks like it might be a Pleioblastus.

Canadianplant,
Definately not scabrida, and i would imagine robusta would be more cold tolerant

Dependable,
Would have thought Pleioblastus would be more cold tolerant?

I am thinking an obscure Borinda or something related?

Maybe, but cold tolerance can be site specific(was damaged by raw temperature or wind?), especially if still in pot. The plant looks a lot like Pleiobastus simmone I have and also like humilis I had at one time. But it is just a guess.

Dont be fooled by what the internet says about Robusta/Scabrida. They arent as hardy as they say, but -5C would be a but warm for the plant to top kill IMO. When you said those temps top kill it, did you mean the one in the pot, or the parent clump?

It is possible its borinda fungosa.

dependable, canadianplant,

The parent plant is in the ground.

I have mine in the pot still because I brought in into my garage over the winter.
It's back out this weekend. Thought it would do better outdoors now.

Must say that having a look, this doesn't look all that exciting.
There are a lot nice bamboos.
Not sure I am going to keep it. Would rather use the space for something nicer.

Got my eye on a Borinda papyrifera this summer......
But from my research, that is also untried and might be borderline re temps.
