Please ID...variegatred, 8 feet tall, gold culms, clumping

Post by valleyquail »

I've had this variegated bamboo for years. One culm is 8 foot tall, they are yellow/gold in color.
Leaves average 4-6 inches long and 1/2 to 3/4 wide. Grows like a clumping bamboo.
Thanks for any info

It looks like a phyllostachys to me.
Don't forget that the variegated forms are often a lot less vigorous. In your second picture it looks like there is a rhizome in the back that has surfaced.

Do new shoots emerge with green culms and later take on the yellow-ish colour?
You might have phyllostachys bambusoides 'albovariegata' (or Richard Haubrich).

A far shot may also be phyllostachys aurea 'holochrysa' that has developed a stronger variegation. The dead culm in the second picture looks like it has compressed internodes but it is not a very clear sign unless you have seen culms with the typical asymmetric form of internodes found in aurea.

It looks like a Phyllostachys to me though hard to see on my phone. Not near as variegated as my Richard Haubrich but much more variegated than my albovariegata.
im not familiar with any of the variegated Aurea varieties but Brad here and a few other locals seem to have a highly variegated Castillon which is much more variegated than my albovariegata where mine is highly colorful in the spring and early summer many to most leaves revert to green. The Castillon Brad had looked highly variegated even a few months ago.
we are also in Northern California so maybe they came from the same source.
Maybe if he sees this post he can show a picture.

I rest my case...

Maybe the culms can become a deep golden yellow after plenty of your glorious Californian sunshine :D

I noticed on my taller one that's about 7 to 8 ft so far it is more golden than the bushy one and sure planted In more sun it may be much brighter.

It does look similar to the sinobambusa t. albostriata. My book mentions it spreads vigorously.
Mine is a clumper. That's what I am going to call it for now. Thanks again.
