Help identifying clumping bamboo.

Post by Adam A »

So found this in a guys yard in Gulf breeze zone 9B. Did not know what it was, said he bought from BooGorYou. So I took pictures to them and he could not identify either. Did very well through winter here. Wondering if it might be Sunburst or Asian lemon. I will put a few more pictures up.

I'm not overly familiar with the more tropical bamboos but it could be Bambusa multiplex 'alphonse karr'

Nicholas, I considered it, but this seems to have very few branches on lower 1/3rd and the combs or shoots are already getting bigger than most Alphonse Karr. Anyone else with a guess.

I think lack of lower branches might rule out Asian Lemon.

I'll suggest what I think it is not, I have A Karr, B eutuldoides Virdivittata, and B pervariabilis Viridistriata and it does not remind me of any of those. I also have B dolichomerithalla Stripe and it does not quite look like that but mine is young and may betray form so don't rule that out.

Thanks for the input guys. I would to find out what it is so I can grow some as it is a beautiful specimen. This gentleman had a clump of 30 ft Oldhami that got destroyed by the the winter, but this held up just great.

Find it ironic that even the bamboo specialist at (Boo For You) who sold it to him could not identify exactly which species it was when I showed him the pictures. Makes me wonder if he sold him something that he normally doesn’t carry.

My guess is Sunburst, but I am not 100% sure.

Both Asian lemon and Sunburst both have lower branching. Could the owner have pruned it? Sunburst tend to have slightly smaller leaves than the Asian lemon. Is there green culms in the clump? Could be bambusa emeiensis Flavidovirens if it does.
