I see lots of specialty bamboo nursuries carry P.Nigra Henon, Meguro, Unmon/bory, hale.. etc, etc, but I have never seen Daikokuchiku for sale anywhere in Canada.
This is the largest version of black bamboo you can get with culms close to 4"x60ft.. At least the palntings in Sagano Kyoto are this big.
How come I never hear about P.Nigra Daikokuchiku?

Phyllostachys nigra 'Daikokuchiku'
I have this clone, it is planted near my Phyllostachys nigra. Though it was planted 2 years later it has shown much more vigor than Phyllostachys nigra, but still nothing like its potential. I still wonder if I will ever get them to grow anything like they do in more humid climates. Our humidity here is usually in the teens and the temperatures in the 100's F. The small planting is expanding fairly well, but the culms are only 3/8" diameter and a maximum of about 6 feet high and this is season four.

How do you think it would do in Florida? Plenty of humidity down here

I received my start of this clone from Mark Hilt of Bambu-U. He said that in his conditions it wasn't really demonstrating most of the traits it would be expected to. For him it hadn't grown larger nor the culms darken sooner than normal Phyllostachys nigra.
Is anyone else growing this clone? How is it doing for you?

I phoned Bamboo Canada and it seems they do carry it in limited quantities.BooKing wrote:I guess they don't have good taste up there...
Unmon/bory and Meguro are more popular/
