Is this Phyllostachys rubromarginata?

Post by weretable »

Someone gave me a start of some bamboo that they found growing on a creek and although I think I have identified it, I want to be sure.

The bamboo has turned yellow in sun, however I saw the grove where my friend found it and the culms were entirely green. It was partly shaded and the tallest were probably around 30 feet. I have no idea how long the grove has been there.

My yellow groove and Phyllostachys nigra punctata had both finished shooting when this bamboo started this spring and the bamboo is currently shooting a second time and producing more culms than it did in spring. It has been around 100F everyday lately and I was surprised to see the bamboo putting up 5 new culms. It only had two new shoots in the spring.

It's a little hard to say for sure on a young division but it does indeed look like Rubro...

I had gotten some rubro rhizome from David back in March of this year. I have it in full sun, it is more yellow like yours and the nodes look the same.

I have this one in a 7 gallon planter and all others are in ground. They are also in full sun and that color. Both ways are shooting again now.

The long node to node length looks like rubro. The shoot is almost certainly rubro. My rubro culm colors range from yellow to very green to green And yellow mixed depending on the sun exposure, and age. Rubro sends up shoots sporadically all summer after the main shooting time, especially after a rainy period. The shoots taste like green peanuts if you want to waste one on a taste test. I'm 96.7521% sure it's rubro, but being a green bamboo I reserve 3.2479% to change my mind  .

Serenity,

What on earth are you feeding your rubro?! They were bare rhizomes in March! Nice Job :!: 8)

Why, Thank You David :) I use SUPERthrive solution weekly and 6-6-6 fertilizer every 6 weeks. Here are a few pictures of the ones (rubro) that I put in ground to run the fence line... the pictures are about 3 weeks old. Last weekend they were even larger, but it started to pour rain before I could get new photos. I will have to get some tomorrow. Thanks again for the rhizomes :!:
