Brian,

Can't tell for sure, but here's my thinking out loud.

Probably too dark green for B. oldhamii.
Then that would lead to B. vulgaris.
But the leaves don't look big enough to be B. vulgaris.
The nodes don't seem to be swollen enough to be B. vulgaris.
The culm sheaths would also have a lot of dark hairs on then.
The culm, just to the left of center, seems to have some roots on one of the nodes. Has this plant been in a humid greenhouse?
The size of the leaves, culm color, and slight zig-zag leads me to guess the the plant is, and this is my guess, probably some form of Bambusa t. ventricosa. :?:

It's in the palm house at Franklin park conservatory. The room is a bit humid. They prune the heck out of the 2 clumps in there, only allowing a few culms to stand.

Well, I was right on one observation, so let's see if anyone else has an opinion or guess. :D

Roy/Brian,

Another possibility would be tuldoides, but if it chronically zig zags then I would agree it is more likely ventricosa. As an aside, I have a young oldhamii that was killed back last winter that has put up a really zig zaged culm.

I have ventricosa and tuldoides growing side-by-side. In my plants, the main difference are:

1/ tuldoides is straighter and more up right
2/ tuldoides has fewer (less dense) lower branches
3/ tuldoides is a more open clumper as a young plant
4/ tuldoides' culm tend to yellow more when 1+ years old. (Probably due to more sun hitting the culms.)

The only thing that leads me to say tuldoides is a possibility is that I think if my ventricosa was pruned to the extent of the one in the picture, it would be a much more bushy plant but in a greenhouse with less light, who knows. I think you would need to grow it outside in Z8b or higher to see its true form.

Mike near Brenham TX.
