Hello all:

Rutgers in N.J. has an old Phyllostachys Nuda bamboo forest that has been growing for over 50 years.It is truly magnificent for the northeast.

I'll have to check that next time I'm in NJ. Where is it? North, south? Take some photos, would love to see it.

It's in New Brunswick, New Jersey at Cook College/Rutgers University.
It's a few acres.Culms over 2 1/4in over 35+feet.

What hardiness zone is the forest in? I wonder when it'll flower.

Looks like the culm leaf blades are crinkled. Nice nuda effect going on there. Either my eyes are getting better or it's your photography.

yeah , some of my photos are a little less than clear. I try my all with my old school no zoom 1.3 megapixel. I was thinking about going new school this year, but bought alot of cool plants instead. I'm letting my olympus chug along for one more year(or 2?) for its grand finale. It still can take pics to share with everyone, to at least get an idea of what's going on.

I'll be able to take some better pics sometimes in the summer when 5megap is present.

I am glad to see it doing well. I am going to take some pics when the BIG GROVE starts shooting.......

BooKing, that's a great idea to document the Rutger's grove shoot fest. It will be really cool to see some pix from that. Hope you can share some of those or maybe they'll wind up on the Rutger's website. Hope so.

I guess it goes to show that a bamboo shoot can have many faces.

I noticed that it has a sandpaper feel to the it. Your super-closeup details what I feel. Is that described in any book for identification purposes>?

The wording is tricky:

culm sheaths grayish wine, farinose [mealy, powdery], scabrous [short stiff hairs] but not pubescent [short, soft hairs], the margins glabrous, basal ones blotched with wine, the upper ones immaculate...

Awesome pic. I have been so busy tending to my arboreteum to check on the shooting yet. I will definately go next week.
