And it's raining again.

Post by mantis »

Minor to major flooding forecast along the Brazos River.

Flood levels not seen since October of 1994 and Christmas of 1991 are forecasted on the Brazos River

Rainfall of 4-8 inches over an already swollen middle Brazos River will result in rises to above flood stage at Bryan downstream through West Columbia. Major flooding is expected in the reach from below Hempstead to below Richmond with homes threatened in many portions of Fort Bend and Brazoria counties.

At Richmond:

Current: 38.52 ft
Flood Stage: 48.0 ft
Bankfull: 20.0 ft
Forecast: river will begin a steep rise late Monday and crest near 49.80 ft late Friday.

At 48.0 ft homes begin to flood homes in Missouri City from backwater up Flat Bank Creek. At 49.8 ft homes are flooded in Simonton and Thompson with major flow out of the river floodplain into Oyster Creek. Homes in the Oyster Creek Farms Subdivision are inundated with water. Significant back water will be experienced throughout much of Fort Bend County and the river will be discharging nearly 90,000 cfs at the Hwy 90 gage. At 50.7 ft hundreds of homes in Richmond are flooded?HWY 90 is close to being submerged with many evacuations required. Water is several feet deep on protective levees throughout Fort Bend County with severe back water flooding along many tributaries. The US 59 turn arounds will be under several feet of water.

Floods of Record: 50.3 ft 10/94
49.80 ft 1/1/92
48.93 10/98

In the picture I have a thumb tack where my house is, and you can see the river snaking through the middle of the picture.

At least I have flood insurance. :laughing1:

Raining down here once again as well. I think Florida sent us all their rain. I don't remember a July where we had this kind of rain.

I just was reading in the Tampa paper today that it looked like Tampa would be down an inch or so in rainfall this July. The interior parts of Florida have been getting the rains and the Suncoast. The only thing I got shooting fairly well is B. chungii and B. malingensis.

My B. doli. 'Silverstripe' is going nuts! I got it through the ABS auction last fall. It was 3 skinny clums. It has put up 7 fat shoots in the last month. Vulgaris is also shooting like a boo possessed.

Now I just need some sun! 8)

We had a big storm last night. In less than an hour we got over 3" of rain. The wind was ~40mph. Some of my skinnier boo were lying flat on the ground.

My wife just sent me pics of my neighbor's tree...

Got a couple more inches of wet stuff today myself. My driveway was all most dry from the 12+ I got over the holiday. Wife got her car stuck trying to get it out before more rain. Not shure why she brought it up to the house in the first place.
At least my boo didn't get flooded again. Most had about a foot of water standing onthem for a few days from the last event.
looks like more to come for the next couple days any one got a snorkle I can borrow.

Hey! thats where our water went....barbarians....  We need water...give it back!
Speaking of too much water...Has anyone ever had too much water to the point where their bamboo suffers? It sounds like a dumb question but maybe it has happened to a few of you tropical folk-

Here's one that too much of a good thing (water), will do it in.

Perhaps you should try and convince your neighbor that bamboo might be a better replacement plant.

Actually that is my neighbor who is letting me use his yard to plant my "extra" boo. 8)

Due to HOA requirements, if a tree dies in your front yard you have to replant. Not sure if they'd accept boo as a replacement...

Now here is where this statement is appropriate: "Bamboo is a grass and not a tree!". I've had to use that statement many a times.

I think a large clumper would fit the reason behind those rules plus.
None of my tropicals had any stress from being under water for a couple days and the soil is still saturated with my water table right at the surface right now. Have one B. vulgaris cutting that is newly planted that I am worried about being new and catching the worst of it. But so far it is hanging in there. I do have a Mexican weeper that got flooded in a large pot. It was standing in about twelve inches up the side of the pot for two days before I remembered it and raised it and let it drain. It seems to be ok.

I lost an Otatea Aztecorum "acuminata" that I planted about 3 months ago. It was in a 38 gallon pot with lots of shoots. I even planted it on a berm about 3 foot higher than the rest of the property, but we have had soo much rain it finally died... I think. No sign of life as of yet. It is still raining and in the forecast for the next 4 days or so.

I also lost 3 culms from my Dendrocalamus Sinicus clump. One culm is still alive and growing, but with all the added rain... I don't know. I added 3 inches of dirt around it and 6 inches of mulch to try to divert some of the rain, we will see if it holds on. The good news is I have a cutting from that one and the other one in the ground is doing ok.

TOOOOOOOOOOOO much rain. Flooding, Flooding, everywhere.
