Hello Everyone

Post by Wayne64 »

I thought this was a good place for an introduction. I've been lurking & learning for a while and as a true newbie will have lots of questions down the road. My interest in Bamboo goes back to 68, but this year will be my first attempt at growing it. I live on the ant hill called Long Island NY so I guess I'm zone 7? My spelling leaves a lot to the imagination so please bear with me. I may not know bamboo but have a real good handle on welding, pipefitting and vehicle repair, so I?ll do my best to add to the forum. In the future I may post a couple of stories, Bamboo related, that is a little out of the norm.

Wayne,

Welcome to the board. Sounds like you are a handy guy to have around when something breaks. What bamboo are planning on growing?

get an email most everyday form a buddy in TX. Stand up folks those Texans are. To answer your question After my research for what I need and can use it looks like Fargesia robusta would be the best. I am putting a full question together to start another thread complete with photos of the small area I want the Bamboo. Today I took some photos of a grove I was told about at a local hospital, I had to visit someone there and brought the camera to multi task. Someone at the hosiptal must like bamboo as there was potted boo in the halls and was even the theme for some of the wallpaper in the rooms.

Wayne...also home of the biggest parking lot....the LIE...I know of a guy who goes by the name of Macdaddy from the
GW forum. He is out on the island as well.....I used to live in hampton bays and east quogue....nice digging out there...He knows there is a grove out by stoney brook.....I haven't seen macdaddy here yet....but i'm sure he will venture over.....eventually....obviously Wayne you can plant a runner and use kudzu's famed rhizome pruning method for containment or install a rhizome barrier. i don't know how levitown's soil is but if its anything i experienced out there it is easy digging. You do have options....and welcome....sorry about not enabling you out for a day....and yup i believe the island is a z7....everything grows out there. compared to me here....

I heard from Hamptons Grass today, in an email he suggested F.Rufa -green Panda instead of the Robusta. I'll be driving out in a few weeks but the Rufa seems to short for what I need. Here is the bamboo I shot yesterday, it was 28F. Behind the bamboo was a 12' retaining wall.

Wayne64,
Looks like aureosulcata to me
pic "DSC00011.JPG" shows the characteristic zig-zag near the bottom of several culms.

Iowa, I think that actually that is Yellow Grooveless...that pic clearly illustrates how the coloration shows up even when there is no sulcus. That grove is obviously mature and no longer produces branches for the first few vertical feet, thus no groove but still yellow.

Yellowgrooveless, ehh.
Even though it is common for many, it seems to be one that is quite beautiful. Sure wish rubromarginata could have color enhanced culms to bring to the table.

I agree with your suggestion as his area speaks of well healed customers, and this guy is no way in their leaque. Trust me I will defer my final pick and plan to this body of members. I really want the snow gone so I can better show what I have in mind. My best guess is by thrusday I can take the pictures, post the objective and learn. I have one more grove to take photos of. One I found 10 years ago in an old timers back yard, I drove my GF over to see it last week. And now she is also looking forward to a planting of the tall grass. :D

Is the snow y'all have left over from the big one or have you had subsequent snow events?

We really lucked out this year, only three snow falls so far. Being 10 mins from the ocean we get missed a lot. The big one (which to me having spent a couple of years in Saranac Lake was no big deal) was gone pretty quick this last one was small but worse in my book since it went rain-snow-rain then a final topping of snow and a big temperature drop. I don't mind the cold or snow, it's the *&^% salt they put on the roads that makes me crazy. I have to wait for at least 4 rain falls to wash the streets before I will take out two of my finished cars :x Can't be too good for the soil or the ground water either, the way they overdose us.
