Camera, Check!, Wish List, Check! 5 hours driving, Check!
Off to bamboo garden to do my part in stimulating the economy..... wish list in one hand, camera in the other......
they are closed today because they do shipping on Mondays, but said I could come out and wander around if I wanted the place pretty much to my self... I couldnt help but take them up on it! Im sure the plants are looking a little battered by this point in the winter, especially with the severe snow and Ice storms they had, but I should get some great photos of how they have held up through the winter.
Stay tuned for more exciting information! (maybe tomorrow, its 5 hours one way to there from home, so I may be too tired to do anything today!)

Oh come on! A young strong lad like yourself should be able to do that and then come home and plant everything you bought.ghmerrill wrote:(maybe tomorrow, its 5 hours one way to there from home, so I may be too tired to do anything today!)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who drives 5 hours one way to buy bamboo.
Don't think I'd do it in winter though (but don't hold me to that).

Just wait in a couple of years you will be driving 5 hours to talk about bamboo.
If anyone is at the Seattle Flower and Garden show on Saturday, I will be helping out in the ABS booth from 3:00 till 9:00. Kudzu (and others) will be manning the booth that morning. OK that is only about 4 hours away for me but I do have a 6 hour shift in the booth and I want to get there early to see some of the show.

C'mon mantis.... im practicly middle age, and felt elderly after huffing and puffing up the hill from the greenhouse! Now I know why Ned and crew use golf carts!
I will say, after seeing the place last fall, it as really sad to see the winter damage they took. one hoophouse collapsed, but did not get damaged. they were cliping and pileing TONS of broken culms, branches, etc. some of the real show stopper boos like his huge B. papyrifera really took a beating from the cold. I think Woody said they got hit with 8f as the low, and Ned said that there was about 2' of snow, so you can imagine how happy things like the vivax were.
B. papyrifera looked decidedly unhappy, but like it will come back, the culms were in good shape, all leaves gone.
B. albocerea was the same
moso got a bit leaf burned
Chusquea andina looked like it got a bit burned, but was not bad looking

Okay, folks on dialup are hating me, so I will stop puting pics on this subject and do another one later with more pics from there.

I'm already planning on buying a 4 wheeler to get around on my little 3.5 acres.ghmerrill wrote:C'mon mantis.... im practicly middle age, and felt elderly after huffing and puffing up the hill from the greenhouse! Now I know why Ned and crew use golf carts!

yeah, and I tell you, you know someone has been in the business for a while when they run the total and it comes to the EXACT PENNY of what you have in cash on you. I complimented Ned on being able to smell a dollar hidden in someones wallet
I was mostly looking for low end, inexpensive plants, with a few nice ones too... several they did not have. I commented on the Borinda fungosa white cloud, and asked the price.... Ned jokingly said "less than that B. papyrifera", looked it up, and gave me a price. I told him I would see what I spent, so we totaled it up, and by adding the White Cloud, it came to exactly the amount I had on me... I figured it was a divine sign that I should take it home with me (any excuse will do, right?).
since we are almost into the perfect time of year for planting here, I added to the collection:
Phyllostachys preacox Viridsulcata
Sasa senanenis
Sasa tsuboiana
Sasa hayatae
Sasella ramosa
Sasamorpha borealis
Pleoblastis kongosanesis Aureostriatus
Phyllostachys vivax Huangwenzhu
Phyllostachys parvifolia
Phyllostachys iridecens
Phyllostachys flexuosa Kimmei
Indocalamus herklotsii
Fargesia robusta Pingwu
Fargesia denudata Xian II
Sasa oshidensis
Borinda fungosa White Cloud
Semiarundinaria makinoi
Sasa cernua
arriving from bamboo plantation tomorrow,
Chimonobambusa quadrangularis Suow
Indocalamus cordatus
Indocalamus latifolius Albovariegata
Indocalamus longiauritus
Phyllostachys bambusoides Tanake
Pleoblastus humilis Variegatus
Sasaella bitchuensis
Sasaella masamuneana Aureostriata
Sinobambusa intermedia
ariving from trade to Mantis this week,
Bambusa textilis Maculata
Pleoblastus argenteostriatus
Pleoblastus chino Kimmei
picking up locally tomorrow,
Borinda nujanjensis
Borinda boliana
Pleoblastus hinsiii
Sasa nagimontana
Fargesia denudata
Fargesia robusta Wolong
Indoclamus latifolius
Indoclamus hamadae
Pleoblastus chino Vaginatus Variagatus
Pleoblastus linearis
I have a LOT of holes to dig, line with wire, and fill with topsoil once the weather warms

I feel bad about how small the plants are that I sent you, so you'll get another box next week with some surprises. I'm not telling you what you're getting, so you'll just have to wait.ghmerrill wrote:

I think I sent you these pics, but just to make sure you aren't completely disappointed when you open the box that is currently en route...

yeah, you sent me the pics, no worries- they grow! the entire list of plants I listed are all small, mostly one gallon plants. time is going to happen anyway, so I went for the most I could get species wise.
On the boo at Bamboogarden... ya, serious pain there. Ned was showing me his tortoise shell moso culm he spent the BIG bucks on at the ABS auction.... not a single bud underground, so its a dud.... the guy cant catch a break this winter!
