The Chicken Cabana!

Post by mantis »

Anyone else raise chickens? We started about a month ago with some 3 week old barred rocks. The following week we bought a Rhode Island Red and an Ameraucana. Now that old girls are getting to be almost 2 months old we built our chicken tractor.

Nice job! I wish we could raise chickens here, but subdivision bylaws won't allow it. :(

:D Once they start laying eggs, you'll never want to eat any store bought eggs again!

We've had the live trap out for a week now, and just caught mouse #9 last night. The first day the trap was out we caught 7, then nothing for 5 days, and then 2 on Saturday.

Mice?

I don't own a live tap that small!

Last time I got fed up with mice, I took the trusty 'ol red ryder bb gun out, shined the mag light against the wall of one of the aviaries, and plinked them as they ran into the beam (they usually hit the light and then freeze for a few seconds). I got over a dozen before I got bored.....
Now, a couple times a year I put out mouse bait, and the bird seed that was attracting the mice convinced me to get chickens. Two years now, and I have not had to buy a bag of feed for the chickens, and with them eating the seed inside the aviaries, and me baiting outside, the mouse population had dwindled dramatically.

A mouse gets in with the chickens and the chickens will eat it. You aught to see what chickens will do to a rattlesnake that got caught in the chicken wire after it ate an egg. Might make you feel sorry for the snake.

That's a great coop. Do you move it around the yard? We recently turned an old outhouse into a coop. Some old dog kennel fencing from the dump, instant chicken farm. We have 4 birds, average 2-3 eggs a day.

I tried raising chicks but they just became food for hawks.
the hawks would hop right into the coop and kill them.
i would like to try again, but with an adult rooster for protection.
(once my wife recovers from seeing all her baby chicks eaten.)
