You should have no problem with F. murilae & nitida if your climate is similar to Steve's. Might get some burn but should be hardy enough.

The snow here wouldn't bother me (yes it weould it's too much) but the ground is frozen underneath so it could take ages to "defrost".

We got a path to the greenhouse shovelled today. While we just got to 0F this winter it will be interesting to see how the bamboos fared with the continuous cold since early January. This is the worst snow I've seen since I was a kid.

Wow, you are still buried. At least we got a little thaw, there is about 30% of ground in my yard showing, closer to 70% in warmer spots on the island. We are in for a couple more inches snow tonight.

Flocks of blackbirds and others showing up, wonder how long they can go without eating, not much thawed water either.

Of course the damn deer can walk on the snow and eat everything in their path. The big concern here are the bobcats and animal shelters are taking in the ones that they find until this lets up. Seems we see less & less birds every year which is troubling. Plow just made it down the street and around the abandoned car. An inch of rain tomorrow which will make for a dandy mess.

It looks like we now know why the Northeast is being hit.

http://climatecrocks.com/2015/03/23/a-n ... new-video/

BTW, I've read that the Gulf Stream acts to pull the ocean away from the East Coast. If it shuts down it can add about a meter to the Sea Level rise that is already expected.

I'm sorry I looked at that. Could the east be the new North Pole? Seriously, given that cold spot in the N. Atlantic why would the Gulf Stream not buckle causing the stream to come closer to N. America and then bend down (the buckle) south of that cold area and squeeze itself along the western EU/UK coast? I suupose easier to go underneath the cold area.

It does give us an explanation for this mysterious flooding event a few years ago.

On a related note, Ted Cruz is now comparing himself to Galileo.

This was after he claimed that the satellite record showed no warming in the past 17 years. Here's a link to an article where the satellite record for the last 17 years is plotted.

Some interesting things are happening with the sea ice in the Arctic. I expect something in the news about what is happening in the next month. The image should update each day.

There's a lot of very warm air coming into Arctic from Western Europe. Russian heat wave from around one month ago managed to warm up the sea to unbelievable temperatures. I think I've read that in some places, surface water is more than 10C above average.

European heat wave is supposed to be around until 7. 7., then it should cool down a little but it looks like it will remain sunny and around 30C even after the cooldown. A lot of warmth. :)

That looks kind of dramatic, no ice off Siberia. Any past reference pictures to what is 'normal'? Is the ice thicker than normal off North America, or just thinner off Russia/Asia?

At this point there really isn't a normal. However. looking at past pictures it is rather apparent the Arctic Ice is going away. The Sea Ice Area figure may stay up for a while, but it will be thin ice.

A bit of an addendum, according to Arctic News, on July 2nd Eastern Siberia set a record temperature of 98.78°F, which was hotter than Miami that day. Considering that Eastern Siberia is well within the Arctic Circle, it bodes ill for sea ice.

I believe the climate is changing. And the world is getting warmer on average. Sure seems to be getting colder here though.

My P nigra, henon & borida, look like killed to ground in that cold snap. Barely any re leafing here yet. Only shoots so far worth mentioning is P a 'Spectabilis". It just hit the 60's F this week, daytime temp only.

I'm told this is el ninio, any one know what long term forecast for New England?

On the whole, I'd rather too cold than hot, but still...

Cozy warm winter, but this spring, it's swinging. We haven't seen that much snow in late April (27th) for at least 10 years, hell, we haven't seen that much snow the whole winter. Next couple of days, morning temps may drop to close to freezing, then it should get warmer. I hope so..

Weather in the Northeastern states is being affected by a cold spot in the North Atlantic being caused by massive amounts of melt water running off of Greenland.
