What's wrong with this maple tree?

Post by Ino »

When I was in the woods today I saw this baby maple tree but what really got my attention was this one leaf that had these weird red and white spots on it at first I thought it was a fungus growing on the leaf but when I touched it I didn't feel anything on the outside of the leaf so whatever it is its inside the cell walls of the leaf so I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this or knows what this is because I've never seen anything like this before. Heres a picture I took when I was out there.

Looks like early stages of maple tar spot. It gets worseas the summer progresses. Norway maples are espcially badly affected.

Maple tar spots? You don't think it will spread to any of my 2 Japanese maples do you because I took this picture in the woods near the side of my yard the Japanese maples are only about 20 feet from these woods and about probably 35 feet from this infected maple.

Not so psychedelic in another few weeks when those spots turn tarry black.

No it will not spread to Japanese maples.
