Parvifolia is not the easiest bamboo to propagate and grow in pots either which helps explains its high price.

I don't know, Parvifolia might have to be grown from bare rhizome in order to have mail order sizes, except for a stray whip shoot. That or you might have to chop into the grove to force the plant to produce smaller canes.

David, how do you get a supply of smaller divisions off yours?

I have a 5-year old patch that I have taken I think 5 divisions from, one was small enough to ship, one does not seem to be doing anything as it was a whip with little non-green rhizome to work with and the others took 10-20 gallon pots as that grove is not producing anything small.

I've started 2 other groves from 2 of these divisions, one is 2 years old and the other I planted in March this year, having dug it the prior spring. The March planted one produced 6-7 canes that are all in the 10 foot range, the 2-year old is throwing 15 footers about an inch in diameter. They are only going to get larger so unless I really mess with it I'll only have big divisions.

Brad,

I've got one grove that I have taken several small divisions from and have cut into it enough that it still produces smallish culms. I took 5 divisions from it yesterday and today. four- 3gal, and 2-2gal. I'll probably take another 5 or 6 from it next week. I have to really baby them for a while, keep them in the shade, lots of water, and still will likely lose a couple anyway.

Fred- I'm glad to hear your parvi is doing so well, tough little plants!

Regards,

David
