Bambusa pervariabilis veridi, chungii, oldhamii: how fast?

... do they size up? In 8b/9 San Antonio? 85F+ hi and 70F low from mid-March to 1 October?

I planted B. tuldoides in July 04, got 10 x 10 ft culms by December.

In 05, 06, 15 x 15-20 ft culms

In 07, wow, some much bigger monsters still coming up.

Way faster than my Vivax.

So, how fast are these 3 Bambusa?

Not sure about San Antonio but in central Florida Bambusa tuldoides is very prolific at putting up large number of new shoots all at once and the others you mention won't beat it in my opinion. One that can is a Bambusa emeiensis 'Viridiflavus' mine having gone from three culms last summer to putting up 17 culms all at once then 3 more within a month this summer for a total of 20.

I have heard Bambusa pervariabilis veridi is a bit slow compared to other bambusa and I can say mine certainly has been slow compared to all my other bambusa. Oldhamii from the start is a fast and rewarding grower, getting bushier and bigger, then taller, every year. Chungii looks at little whipped when small but takes off after it is established.

I have a B. chungii that will be 2 years in the ground this Christmas from a 3 g pot and it's put up a butt load of culms in that time. It's in a shady location and gets plenty of water!.

Mr. Mike, how tall is your Chungi now? I wonder if this growth is the norm for chungii from 3 gal pots? Was the root system well established in the pot? Yours is faster than mine I think. 2.5 years ago mine was approximate. 25 foot with 3 culms rhizome cutting from a field specimen topped at about 12 feet. Its first summer it put up 3 shoots then this summer it put up 4 shoots. I wonder if we can say you get a faster boo with potted specimens as compared to rhizome cuttings or maybe your shade and feeding or other growing conditions are the reason for its rapid growth?

Anybody, other than me, getting any bigger diameter and taller than ABS Source List size for B. chungii?
