2008 Boo Shooting Diary

Wow, we have almost all the exact same bamboos. Mine are for the most part just planted this spring so very little excitement to report here, just small shoots.

I'll bet your plants size up faster than mine.
Most of my bamboos get hit hard in the winter which keep them smaller.
I did just notice that I have a couple of Rubromarginata shoots that are larger than one inch so that is the biggest so far. The shoots are on the plant that I gave extra fertilizer to the last couple of Falls. The shoots on the plant that gets fertilized with the rest of my bamboos only are only in the 5/8 inch range so far. The other species that I gave extra fertilizer to last Fall have not started shooting so I cannot say if it helped them.

I also noticed I have Phyllostachys stimulosa shoots.

So far this spring: Fargesia robusta (8 foot high shoots), F. dracocephala rufa (6 feet), Qiongzhuea tumidissinoda (15feet), Sasa kurilensis shimofuri (14 feet), Chusquea culeou (8 feet), Bashania fargesii (12 feet), Phyllostachys edulis (still in progress, 50 feet), P. heteroclada solidstem (20 feet), P. aureosulcata spectabilis (35 feet), Hibanobamusa tranquillans shirofshima (15 feet), P. elegans (30 feet), P. nigra (still in progress, 15feet), P. n. bory (in progress, 15 feet), P. makinoi (20 feet), Semiarundanaria fastuosa (in progress, 10 feet).

My very first boo (Phyllostachys vivax 'Black Spot'), had it's very first shoot! It looks like about 3 days ago, as I noticed it for the first time yesterday. I tried taking pictures, but they didn't turn out too well, so went outside today and there was another one just breaking the surface! Ah, such a proud daddy...

Atrovaginata has finally started to show some shoots. Since early this morning, I've found six new shoots.

The nitida you sent me about 2 years ago has yet to flower (figures since it is startig to look good) - any signs of your "mother" plant flowering yet?

Rick - The mother plant looks great. Have seen big nitida plants at 2 other locations in the area and there is no sign of flowering on them either. This area has missed other species flowering as well. Glad your plant is doing good. Rgds - Fred

I spotted the first Fargesia nitida shoot of the season today. Nearly a month earlier than last year and two weeks earlier than year before last. In the past it had been the last to put up shoots.

Four bamboos left that haven't put up shoots.

Phyllostachys vivax is starting to shoot here, and I found some tips on the P. bambusoides down in the mulch, so they should be shooting soon.
