Carbon Conversion, sustainability and the like
I'm interested in resources for phytoremediation, carbon sequestration, oxygen conversion and things of that nature. The more detailed and explicit the better. Anyone have resources for me?

I don't know if this will help you.

BillAndrea Melnychenko is a student at Portland State, who is researching bamboo’s emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). When a plant breaths in air, it exhales oxygen, water vapor and a 5-carbon compound called isoprene. (Not all plants convert carbon to isoprene and many return unused CO2 2 to the air.) How does isoprene react to polluted urban air? Andrea has taken 100s hundreds of leaf samples from the groves at Ned Jaquith’s nursery, The Bamboo Garden in North Plains, Oregon. Different species of bamboos vary greatly in the amount of VOC that they emit, unlike other plants. Andrea has a Miller Foundation grant to continue her studies of bamboos and urban air.

thats a little scary, isnt it? more ammunition to the anti-bamboo folks....bambooweb wrote:I don't know if this will help you.

Re: Carbon Conversion, sustainability and the like
I think the grant says it all.
Scotch pines emit nitrogen oxides into the air
burning pine trees emit a new class of chemicals from a family of compounds known for their ability to alter human DNA
Some chemicals released by ethanol plants are classified as cancer-causing
I mean OMG the world is gonna kills us.
Especially that dam Oxygen dihydride. That stuff is really nasty. Its found in all cancer cells.
Its emitted into the air by steel plants and nuclear power plants.
Its also called water. H20
PS every smell in the air is a chemical compound.

Oxygen dihydride has nothin on Hydrogen hydroxide, amigo......
BTW, the study of Andrea's little compound may amount too little impact.
It is also a component of the human sysnthesis and is the most common hydrocarbon found in the human body, although at almost undetectable levels.
When we sequester all of the CO2, what will my little plants eat?
Science is being run by the fringe element.....we are lost.

sorry, I strongly disagree... most of them are just regular folks, getting a paycheck, and trying to figure out how to keep that paycheck coming in, and getting bigger, by coming up with the results that guarantee more paychecks keep coming, and getting bigger....bepah wrote:Oxygen dihydride has nothin on Hydrogen hydroxide, amigo......

Re: Carbon Conversion, sustainability and the like
It is when they try and legislate reality. Trying to pass laws changing the value of pi (Indiana) or voting on the age of the Universe (Texas) is incredibly stupid. If the laws are passed successfully they lead to a cascade of errors resulting in much dead and destruction.

Re: Carbon Conversion, sustainability and the like
but what can us mere mortals do?
our "representive form of government" hardy represents the people- too many times what has been voted by the populace, is changed legislatively because the lobbiests have the ear of the career politicians....
anyway, wrong forum for my soapbox

I must disagree...the EPA has declared that CO2 is a pollutant........that is fringe thinking. I need not explain to anyone how ridiculous this is.....and not a bit of science in it.ghmerrill wrote:sorry, I strongly disagree... most of them are just regular folks, getting a paycheck, and trying to figure out how to keep that paycheck coming in, and getting bigger, by coming up with the results that guarantee more paychecks keep coming, and getting bigger....bepah wrote:Oxygen dihydride has nothin on Hydrogen hydroxide, amigo......

Too much of anything is bad for you, including water.bepah wrote:I must disagree...the EPA has declared that CO2 is a pollutant........that is fringe thinking. Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into an environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem i.e. physical systems or living organisms. Jacking the Carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere up 40% causing the climate to warm, ice shelves to melt, ocean levels to rise, etc., certainly falls under the definition of the word.
And yes the increase of carbon dioxide is causing the Earth to warm. In the past other factors have warmed the Earth and caused the ocean to release carbon dioxide amplifying the warming. Now we have the case of so much extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that we are forcing the ocean to absorb it despite the warming of the globe. Any claims otherwise are ignoring some pretty basic physics.
And lets call it "Global Warming!" The term "Climate Change" was invented by a member of the Bush administration to downplay the emotional impact of the term "Global Warming." The fact that the Global Warming Deniers are now claiming that it was invented elsewhere says a lot about their honesty. Personally I use the term "Global Warming" and will continue to do so.
As a side note, FOX NEWS ran a story a few days ago about the possibility of the lull in solar activity resulting in Global Cooling. Shortly after the story aired solar activity dramatically increased. While there is no causal link between the two events it does say something about the "Global Cooling" nonsense Global Warming Deniers have been spreading.
