Fungus?? Groves dying?

Post by KRedmann »

Hello to all: I have spoken with some of you but need your help. I have an issue with 6-8 year old groves dying out . MSU says they believe its possible Fusarium fungus. I am sending tissue samples and soil samples to a lab for a second opinion. The culms gradually die... base of cilm turns black..rhizome turns black. It has affected Moso, Vivax, Black . any fungicide recommendations??/ Burn ground throughout grove?? Thanks for your help as always. will try to attach pics if I can learn how to. Seems my pics are too large for file upload will be glad to send pics to an email thanks

That sound pretty bad. To attach pictures, try exporting them from your picture file, generally the default export will downsize them so they can be uploaded, or it can be adjusted. Then you can drag on to desk top and then drag into forum attachment file.

I generally resize my photos to 640 wide by 480 tall and those get reduced further here I think but they do work at that size.

Besides some infection, one other condition that might cause this is saturated ground due to more than usual rain, or a change in drainage conditions on land that would cause area to be wetter than in the past. All of the species you listed do not tolerate constantly saturated soil.

Not sure how much lime will help with moisture, but is good addition if pH is low. If it were me, I might look into digging some drainage troughs to channel away water, if I could not elevate the groves with additional material.

If it is a real fungus infection that can destroy bamboos, then you're in luck. Unlucky for the bamboo, but you can collect fungus samples and sell it to those bamboo haters who just want to get rid of bamboos.

Fungus sucks big time, been battling one for the last ten years

Tried a stack of stuuf over the years but the only thing that really seems to help is liming the soil and copper sulphate soil drench.

Hope you get it under control.

Also keeping the grove clean, not letting any rotten canes decompose on the soil and cutting out half dead stuff and burning the lot.
