How are Phyllostachys prominens & P shanghai 3 sizing up
So I have sourced 2 quite rare bamboos Phyllostachys prominens & Phyllostachys shanghai 3 which I pick up in July,How are other people's one's sizing up ??
Re: How are Phyllostachys prominens & P shanghai 3 sizing u
Hi Deane,
I haven't got great pictures of this year's shanghai 3 shoots as I've managed to forget my camera several times in a row now and also could not visit because of work.
To explain: my boos live at the in-laws which is about 80km from Vienna so I usually only drop by on weekends.
Shanghai 3 is performing quite nicely here. So far I haven't had insane up-sizing but also nothing too shabby. It is slightly less vigorous than Vivax (I've got aureocaulis and huangwenzhu).
Appearance wise I think it is a really nice bamboo and definitely worth trying out. It has had slightly less cold damage here than Vivax (this year a lot of Vivax culms got frost damaged though the leaves did not burn... I suppose this is related to our 3 months of constant freezing but nothing below -15*C ).
The pictures are from when I first planted it in June 2012 (the one in the back right, the one on the left is atrovaginata which is also doing really well_ and what it looks like today
all the best,
Nicholas

They look great Nicholas, "is slightly less vigorous than Vivax "is interesting,I wonder if the culms are stronger than Vivax thought

Hi Deane , just got your Pm -will have a look round
prominens is doing rubbish here, I'd be embarrassed to even post a pic
S3 - it's not a big grower here, pretty much keeping up with the bambusoides. It's not in the same league as Vivax/parvi/iridescens etc
Nice looking though, I think it needs a hotter summer than I get here;
Vivax- a younger plant and not far off 9cm. same climate, same attention !

Bamboo...Please note... This plant is seriously addictive and you may lose interest in other, less rewarding plants!

Would Atrovaginata be included in that league, Markj? How does it measure up?Markj wrote:S3 - it's not a big grower here, pretty much keeping up with the bambusoides. It's not in the same league as Vivax/parvi/iridescens etc

Doesn't the Whittaker book mention the good Phyllostachy spp. for cool summer areas?

It does, Johnw, and PW rates P. Atrovaginata highly, but as Markj grows this and the other cold hardy species, I was interested in his experience, and maybe a photo...?
Or am I buttonholing the thread?

Based on my observation, Atrovagina is about as hardy as Parvifolia and Rubro.
However of these 3, Parvifolia sizes up faster then the rest.

Thats a tough one for me as mine is planted in an out of the way spot with competition from other bamboos - it's certainly done nothing special here. I'd guess it's sized up to around 1.5inch max-not a lot in comparison to the others mentioned above.iain wrote:Would Atrovaginata be included in that league, Markj? One of the nearby plants is a nigra form, which doesn't do well in my climate and it's around the same size after 10 years or so
After seeing some of the bigger plants here you'd walk right past it without a second glance, which I guess sums it up for me. But it does get somewhat neglected as result as well- I'll try and spoil it to see what happens.....!

Here in Austria my Atrovaginata is performing really well after a slow start - much more vigorous than parvifolia which lives right next to it.iain wrote:Would Atrovaginata be included in that league, Markj? It doesn't produce really tick culms for me yet but has created a formidable hedge with one or two larger culms that do look really nice.
Overall I find that atrovaginata has a nicer appearance at this stage than parvifolia (I've got the parvifolia clone that really likes to make angled shoots) but I can see that parvifolia has a lot of size potential if you are willing to be patient.

I don't have to cool summers in Indiana, quite the opposite but colder winters, Atrovaginata was/is? my largest bamboo, it had produced culms over 2" and one 2.75" and was my most beautiful grove. I personally like it better than Parvifolia.

Thanks for the insights, and Markj for responding to my question. I was wondering about Atro because I like the green of the culms and the way the older culms pale to grey-green. I have probably only got the room for one more large bamboo. I have been waiting for a young division of Parvifolia from last year that didn't come through. Maybe it is an omen.
Excuse me for shanghaiing the thread. That is a bad one.
