Clumping Bamboo ID

Post by kettlebell »

I was hoping to get some help identifying this clumping bamboo. It was sold to me as Fargesia Robusta. It seems to be a bit more droopy and not as upright as pictures of the robusta I have seen. I planted these in Spring of 2016. Thanks for any help.

It could very well be F robusta of some variety. Shoot colors look right. Likely a Fargesia of some sort.

It may exhibit a more upright habit when more mature, also there are variations in growth habit in different light conditions, etc.

Thanks for the reply. I have noticed that this years shoots are much thicker than last years and any of the existing canes. Hopefully it will be more upright. I planted this for a screen so droopy just won’t work lol.

Thanks for the picture. Mine looks very similar. I didn’t realize there are different types of robusta.

Looks to me like 'Pingwu' for the plants in the ground.

The front shoot in the pot is questionable with the oral setae so low down, if I am seeing right.

Anyway, I planted 'Pingwu' in the ground fall '14 so a full shooting season ahead of yours. Here are a few shots from last year showing a close resemblance to your shoots

wet droop of fall

slightly more upright dry look of summer
