How not to get rid of a bamboo stand?

Post by dependable »

I noticed this next door to a place where I am the caretaker and landscaper. This guy bought the house a few years back, and likes to take on projects his own way. This is/was a well established stand of P bissetti that was planted by previous owner about 20 years ago.

Well, he got a good start by cutting down all the culms. The black stuff is consumer grade weed barrier, the thin flexible stuff. How do you think it will work out? haha I'll take some more pictures in a few months after it shoots, if any of them make it. {;

Guess for me is that the bamboo will just pierce up through it. Waste of money and time. It almost would of been the same price to just get a small machine in there and dig it all up. Now he’ll have useless weed barrier in a few years.

Ha good post!

That tarp will be floating 20' in the air and form a wonderful shade structure, that is unless he gets out there on a ladder before your camera does to remove the fabric from the top of the growing shoots!

If I wouldn't want to dig the rhizomes out, I'd just fertilize it thoroughly and cut anything that would emerge on weekly basis and perhaps eliminate the most evident near soil level rhizomes. Nitrogen fix would make it shoot and then it would starve to death due to regular cutting of fresh bamboo greenery.

Never tried it, but some say it works OK.

I can't wait to see how this does. If it gets lots and lots of hot sun it may just scorch the new shoots but I think they will grow and either pierce or lift the tarp. :)

We should see in a few weeks. Normally this would start shooting in early to mid May, but it has been a late spring. Nothing as of yesterday.

I am curious as to the status of this. I think it could be effective at killing small new growth it it is very sunny for a while.

The fabric did not do much, just blew off in places. But the owner did knock over the new shoots, so he is making some progress.
