Need 3 bamboo identifications for a masters project

Post by noodle1 »

Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone could help me with identifying my bamboo samples for my masters project?
I am investigating feeding preferences of red pandas and have 3 bamboo samples which are in need of identification.
I can't give much description of height as they all grew a couple of meters tall with browse being taken for food daily. They are growing in northern England.
The first had leaves which were very small in comparison with the other plants.

The second had much larger leaves in terms of length and width.

The third plant had slightly thinner leaves than the second and were striped.

I can try to answer any additional questions if anyone has them. Unfortunately, it is unlikely I will be able to get any more pictures (as the institution keeping the pandas is quite far away and I have finished data collection).

All the best,
Lucie

Not sure about the 1st one, but the 2nd one looks like Sasa Veitchii based on the different color around the leaf edges.

The 3rd looks like Pleioblastus viridistratus, again based on leaf coloration. It could be some other variegated species though.

Thank you! The Sasa Veitchii coincides with what someone else has suggested so I think I can be sure of that one now.

Probably best to call it Sasa sp., it might well be Veitchii but many forms of Sasa will wither at the edges like that.
Top one no way to ID but a WILD guess would be a form of Shibataea possibly S lancifolia maybe S kumusaca, bottom one possibly Sasaella masamuneana 'Albostriata' or Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' or a form of Pleioblastus chino or another form of Pleioblastus - my money is on the Sasaella.
