Re: Running bamboo - Stopping growth in one direction ?

Thanks for the input. I am surprised no one else has chimed in about keeping bamboo away from unwanted areas (other than a barrier or trenching or........). Does anyone use drip sprayers, 90 or 180 degrees, to limit growth in any direction ? I suppose when the rains come, they will send out shoots t...

Running bamboo - Stopping growth in one direction ?

Greetings. I planted 12 running boo in August 2013. In a row, spacing was 8 feet, o/c. They are mostly Pseudosasa japonica viridula and akebono with a few Hibanobambusa shiroshima in the mix. They are growing and spreading just fine. I have drip sprayers placed front and back of the boo. I want them...

Re: Slugs

I bought some "Sluggo Plus" for our strawberries. It is iron plus Spinosad (which is a natural bacteria). Seems to work OK.

Re: Fargesia dracocephala "Rufa" Newbie has many questions

So.....15 months later: The new shoots were 3-4 feet and the boo is now about 8 foot tall and 6-7 feet wide. I'm too inept to post a picture. They get a lawn fertilizer light feeding about 3-4 times a year. I have augmented our drip with a rainbird type adjustable sprinkler on a stand for a GOOD wat...

Re: Need Advice on growing bamboo for the first time

Hi John. I am new to bamboo but planted F. dracocephala "Rufa" which is rated down to -15 F in USDA zones 5 - 9.

Coldest it has been here in So. Oregon in the last 6 years was about +20 F.

Re: Need Advice on growing bamboo for the first time

OK, I'll jump in as no one else has yet replied. We wanted to screen out a neighbor's fence; and another section to screen road. We planted Fargisia rufa, a clumping boo, three years ago and they are now about 6' x 6'. Road boo went in this year (F. rufa) and is doing well. We planted on 2' mounds t...

Re: Spray leafs with liquid kelp ?

Made by www.gsplantfoods.com and made from Ascophyllum Nodosu.

About 1+% N; 0.23%P and 6%K. Trace amounts of sulfur, magnesium, calcium, sodium, boron, iron, manganese, copper, zinc and carbohydrates. Use 1 part kelp to 10 parts water.

Re: Fargesia dracocephala "Rufa" Newbie has many questions

So, two years later.....here is a report. The bamboo is growing well; about 5-6' high and 6' wide. No replies about keeping the dry areas wet.....but I did set up a Rainbird adjustable sprinkler on a stand and gave all areas a good, long watering once a week. Probably was a good thing. Any and all c...

Re: Putting layer of manure on grove

Well, I'm a day late and a dollar short, as the old saying goes. We live in Grants Pass, OR and a local building contractor is pals with the person who started and runs www.mycorrhizae.com. He was visiting us and started to pick up brown mushrooms or fungi, or whatever, for his pal. Guess his ...

Re: Fargesia dracocephala "Rufa" Newbie has many questions

I'm baaaack............. The bamboo is doing OK. About 20% of leafs on each plant have yellow/burnt tips. (As I recall, this happened last winter and it cleared up in summer. Is this too much water, such as what happens to blades of grass when they cannot absorb excess water and the tips die?...
