Dracunculus Vulgaris

This year I had several of them survive the depredations of the deer, bloom and are producing seeds! I'm hoping to be able to germinate seedlings soon.

Re: Sasaella masamuneana 'Aureostriata' flowering.

Hi Dan, I have this in another thread, yours came from me I think? How did the bamboo do in Indiana this year? Still a bit early to tell, the worst damage was caused near zero temperatures combined with high winds. Any bamboo that was well shielded from the wind didn't take much damage. We seem to ...

Sasaella masamuneana 'Aureostriata' flowering.

The subject line pretty much says it. I walked into the backyard this afternoon and saw that it is in full flower.

Cardinals were also attracted to the bamboo here.

Re: Website for mapping bamboo groves

I know Batshit Crazy in Connecticut was collecting locations and posting unrelated pictures to an invasive plants website so she could reference them as "proof" of whatever bamboo conspiracy she was pushing at the moment.

Re: Permanent plant labels

I use metal plant labels like the ones in this link: https://www.amazon.com/GardenMate-25-Pack-Metal-Plant-Label/dp/B00814L088/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1471026978&sr=8-6&keywords=plant+labels To them I stick labels from a label maker. I use a label maker that uses TZ tape such as the one h...

Re: Weird Weed

I think you are probably right on this. I'd pretty much given up on identifying it until now. I asked Iain at Fernwood Plant Nursery here and he emailed back this: "I think your friend's mystery fern could be a Ribbon Fern (Pteris spp). They are pan-tropical, often sold in grocery stores as hou...

Bamboo Muffler

I stumbled across this looking for something else. Apparently bamboo can be used to replace the silencer(muffler) on motorcycles. http://www.autoevolution.com/news/bike-exhausts-made-of-bamboo-shame-standard-ones-56038.html (In case you were wondering what I was actually looking for, I had o...

Re: Weird Weed

We went to see the blooming of the Corpse Flower at the university greenhouse today. While we were there we passed by some pots of pineapple plants and I noticed one of these ferns had sprouted in the pot. Considering I'd first noticed this fern in a pot growing a pineapple, it would seem a very hig...

Her actual cause was to harass her neighbors, the bamboo crusade was just a means to an end.

Wind D Ranch wrote:So for all you bamboo guru's, are A. gigantea shoots edible?
Yes, yes they are.
Wind D Ranch wrote:If so, how are they prepared and have any of you tried them?
I have read that the shoots can be cooked as a pot herb. There are also some references to eating the shoots raw.

Re: PLEASE HELP! How to get rid of bamboo

Twenty feet long by four feet wide doesn't seem like all that much, I removed something like that last year using a small electric chainsaw. I cut them off at ground level so that the area could be easily mowed. Most of the time and effort was spent fighting the grape vines and Tree of Heaven that h...
