Recommendation for 8-12 ft bamboo for screen in zone 7b

Howdy folks. I have a nice grove of bamboo behind a 3-sided barrier at my current house, but we're moving to a new place that has a smaller yard. So, I need a bamboo in garden zone 7b (near Hershey, PA) that is about 8-12 feet tall (else it will shade the garden). Ideally, the bamboo would be fairly...

Will plowing prevent bamboo from entering a farmers field?

Hi guys. I'm wondering if the usual plowing that a farmer does will prevent bamboo on an adjacent property from entering his field. Here's a bit more more detail. The link below shows a square lot identified by a red place marker. Its western edge has a tree line that runs north-south and that conce...

Which type of comfrey do I have?

Hi.

Does anyone know how to visually distinguish the various types of comfrey? I want to make sure that the version I have is sterile before I use it as fertilizer for our vegetable garden.

I'll appreciate any guidance ya'll can offer.

Re: Lama Temple

Thanks Wufeng.

Are the culms still getting bigger each year? How much does it run? How deep are the rhizomes?
How does its size compare to other aureosulcatas?

I think Lama Temple (yellow one) is very similar with Phyllostachys aureosulcata aureocaulis, so it is not new cultivar for me.

Hi Wufeng. Do you have the yellow variety of Lama Temple? If so, how big is it? I've not found anyone who has reported that the yellow version is taller than 15 feet.

Re: Lama Temple

Hey Shmu.

Harbin Inversa is my favorite bamboo (so far). Had your BG lama temple survived, do you have a sense for how big it would have been compared to the Inversas?

Re: Lama Temple

jp No green stripes on the one in the Bamboo Garden pic. Seems P. aureosulcata 'Lama Temple' (Auroecaulis type) might better describe it in their catalogue. Where did you read the bit about the relationship to Spec and the height as on the above link they say 20-25ft and that's why I bought it, tho...

Re: Lama Temple

Hi guys. Thanks for the input. Bamboogarden.com calls their variety Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Lama Temple' (http://www.bamboogarden.com/Phyllostachys%20aureosulcata%20%27Lama%20Temple%27.htm). They said that it's the smallest of the aureosulcatas, with mature height about 15 feet (in their setting...

Lama Temple

Howdy folks. I've been trying to find info about Lama Temple (any variety) and haven't uncovered much, except the blurb at bamboogarden.com. In terms of aggressiveness, how does it compare to Spectabilis? I'm in zone 6b/7a and my three-year old Spectabilis is spreading so aggressively that I may rem...

Re: some of my boos

Joe,

How big is your Lama Temple now?

I'm having trouble finding information about it's behavior. I might remove my Spectabilis because it's too aggressive, and I'm wondering if the Lama Temple is less aggressive.

I'll appreciate any guidance ya'll can offer.

Re: Aggressive Spectabilis in Zone 6b

Regarding barriers, what are your experiences with failure? Part of why I enclosed only three sides was to reduce pressure on the barrier. I was afraid that if I fully enclosed it, the rhizome pressure would cause it to fail. The Lewis bamboo folks seem to be very confident about barriers. What do y...

Aggressive Spectabilis in Zone 6b

A few years ago, I planted two spectabili in an 8' x 3' plot that has a barrier on three sides. The other side opens to the rest of the garden. It's beautiful, but unlike the rest of my bamboo, it's in (almost) full fun, so its more aggressive than I anticipated. For example, while pruning its rhizo...

Re: Drooping Culms

Same problem on some species here, henon in particular and I am once again thinking of killing it off save for a meguro form that rebounded with vigor. You won't like my solution I suspect, I went around and topped the floppers at about half height. It is expected with top kill, especially if you c...
