Bamboo Workshop in South Florida (ECHO)

Hey all, There is a tropical agriculture and development class coming up in February in Fort Myers, Florida, at ECHO that some of you might be interested in. I used to work for this organization and, bias included, this looks like a pretty sweet week of learning. Here is a promotional from their web...

Re: Last Call... Boonut Farm

!!! Boonut farm is for sale?! Oh man! I wish I wasn't a poor post-college student. Someone's gotta realize this sweet deal and get down there! Could we auction off the farm through the forum? If I can pay in Tanzanian shillings, then I can start the bidding at 2 million Tsh. Best of luck in retireme...

Indosasa sinica?

Hey all, Greetings from Africa. I want to post a few of my friends comments/questions here because the forum members (you) are very good at ID-ing bamboo. Also, it is good information to have here as well. Any thoughts about this bamboo? I noticed that in another thread, bambooweb posted several lis...

Re: Large Bamboo Falling over

So, Debbie did her work on the 'Amoneus', and the clump which consists of about 350 culms was put back in place yesterday. I climbed up on top and started cutting the culms at around 15-25 feet. Taking off most of the leaves. Then the hole was dug out slightly before putting a rope around the entire...

Large Bamboo Falling over

Hey everyone, Does anyone have experience re-planting, as in to lift up and right fallen bamboo clumps before? I lost a large 10 year old D. Minor 'Amoneus' two days ago, and am wondering if I could just put a rope on it, pull it back vertical, and then allow it to re-root. The pulling up part is ea...

Re: Arundinaria Gigantea

Thanks! This brings back good memories. Iowa State has done a lot of work on AG since this discussion. I find it surprising how many local populations of A. gigantea exist within the southeastern US. It would be fun to look at detailed plant geography studies. After seeing many groves, I am still co...

Re: Guadua velutina flowering

yes, I am currently in FL for a year. The bees stuck around. They were getting something from the flowers. I hope to collect the seeds when they ripen. I am used to temperate lepto's. All these clumping bamboos make living here much more exciting. The campus here has over 40 species of clumping. The...

Guadua velutina flowering

Flowers are full bloom in southwest Florida. Any other places experiencing this? Also, the honey bees were really into the inflorescence. Which is strange considering it should be wind pollinated. Anyway, take a look: http://www.bambooweb.info/images/bamboo/210/img_2049.jpg http://www.bambooweb.info...

Bamboo Weaving

Has anyone run into really good weaving bamboo species of the tropical clumping kind? I need to make some lids for large compost bins, and would like to weave them together for a more lasting compost cover.

Bamboo in Haiti

Does anyone know of anyone growing bamboo in Haiti? And success they have had? I have been twice since the earthquake helping a community rebuild and would love to get them some bamboo they can use. So far I have only seen B. Vulgaris which really isn't the best for eating (cyanide), construction, o...

RE: Is it possible to delay the shooting season of bamboo?

Mulch is the way to go. I wouldn't mess with the aluminum foil... I think the warmth will enter the plants through conduction/convection - regardless of the sunlight over a small area.

Then again, maybe it will work...ha!

RE: What is the absolute most invasive bamboo species?

It depends on the location, however if there was to be one "invasive" species in general I would agree with mantis. The USDA has listed P. Aurea on the invasive species list... In my opinion however it isn't much different from other phyllostachys. And in my area, it hardly spreads at all...

RE: bayer vs sooty mold

I had a bad case of mold in my greenhouse in 2006. I planted some of the plants that fall and the sooty mold stayed forever. Now I didnt try to wash it off, so thats probably why... ha! Now that I think about it...I think the culms never washed off in the rain either...so perhaps some washing and sc...
