Re: Root Grafting

...... Then the jerks in the snow plows come along in the winter and they smack and break anything that is left, and they usually take out the mailbox with it. Seemingly on purpose..... I probably cannot be too much help on the other ones, but maybe with the mail box since I had the same problem in...

Re: Root Grafting

That is good news for me. I got pretty much the same answer from Anna at Bamboo Garden Nursery. That being the case, It would seem that I can increase the resistance of my grove to some extent by running the length of my grove with a "rhizome ripper " to separate the vulnerable side of the...

Root Grafting

A question about the root system of bamboo groves. Some plants will root graft with other plants of the same species (e.g. elm trees) Do some, or all bamboo varieties root graft? The concern is: -- Are bamboo groves used near the road or power line rights of way, as a dust shield at risk from over-s...

Bamboo Mazes

It has occurred to me that If a concrete sidewalk was prepared, laid out as the paths of a maze, and then bamboo was planted between the various concrete paths, one could grow a bamboo maze. A.-- Space has this been done B.-- Would there be any other effective thing that could be used besides concre...

Re: Best Practices for Propagation during shooting.

An idea. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71P3V6Yt8LL._SL1500_.jpg There are SDS plus spade chisels, that would do similar thing. You can check and get the wider one which would go through the soil and even the densest rhizome mass like hot knife through butter. Can be tricky to pull it out, ....

Re: Best Practices for Propagation during shooting.

Once the proper practices are known for how to handle the bamboo, there comes the necessity of doing it. So I am going to present my technique and encourage others to critique my methods to see if anyone can suggest improvements that might make it easier. I suppose that someone might suggest that I ...

Re: Best Practices for Propagation during shooting.

Around about retirement age comes a bit of pacing one's self. The concept that Rome wasn't built in a day comes into play and one realizes that projects can be broken up into phases. Of course the fact that around age 70 one often cannot just keep pushing and get a thing done in a day sort of helps....

Re: Best Practices for Propagation during shooting.

Ok so I got busy and waited for the culms to leaf out. Some I severed the rhizomes and cropped of at about 5 feet, others I left to their own devices until I dug them up. Since I dug them up with substantial root balls I did not want to lift them or handle them unnecessarily, so I made up a sledge o...

Re: Best Practices for Propagation during shooting.

Best propagation during shooting is - leaving the new shoots alone enough to grow branches and leaves. When they are fully leafed, you can start taking divisions. A couple of culms together with rhizomes should be enough to make another grove in a couple of years. Any aureosulcata will start growin...

Re: Rhizome Encouragement Experiment

Ok so I have not visited here recently, but all of the above tricks to try to encourage the grove to spread in the direction I wanted it to failed. Then this spring I did one thing more. I limed it pretty heavily and yes I specifically limed it on the direction I wanted it to advance in as well as l...

Uphill vs Downhill advance of running Bamboo

I have multiple groves of Phyloscachys aureosulcatta growing along the gravel road in front of my yard. The alleged soil there is whatever the bulldozer left when the road was built. My groves provide me with a dust barrier and within 2 years after they were planted were giving me a significant dust...

Winter Damage In SW Missouri, Zone 5-6, Ph. Aureosulcatta

My first experience with Winter kill got all my groves several years ago, my groves were young and getting taller every year. I did nothing and the next year's growth was about 5 feet taller than the year before and covered it all up. That was about Winter 2011-12. It was total kill of all the kulms...

Re: What Happened ???

In the 6 or so years we have been growing bamboo only one winter was severe with sub zero temperatures (0 to 010) every night for a week and lots of wind. That year all the above ground growth in all the groves was killed but the groves all came back vigorously in the spring although none of the gro...

What Happened ???

Unlike previous years, my bamboo seemed to hold its leaves longer than usual. Finally last year's culms in my groves started to green up and put out new leaves. And of course there were the usual number of rhizomes trying to widen the grove. But my largest most vigorous grove held its dead leaves ev...
