Yushania confusa- who grows it? How far does it spread?

So, I occasionally order plants from plant delights nursery. They are offering Yushania confusa so I grabbed one without doing much research. Now I'm finding there isn't much info to be found. But I see that bamboo garden sells their Yushania as running bamboo. Also, the list classifies it as an ope...

Prominens / S3 confusion?

So, it has been awhile since I've been active on the forums and my interest in bamboo had kind of waned, but now I'm back. Did a search for prominens and the latest hit that came back was from a couple of years ago. Is it because the "prominens" that was circulating has pretty much been de...

Re: Variegation

Variegation that morphs over time is not unusual. It's not pursued by people who introduce plants quite as vigorously because if seen in the wrong phase it is not as appealing. Also, when plants are being propagated in a juvenile state, as with tissue culture, it is harder to be sure that the desire...

Re: One of the branches showing more variegation...

That reminds me. I thought I saw a totally variegated culm in a grove of bamboo alongside the interstate a week or two ago. Those who know me well know that I have a talent for spotting these kinds of things. It's not too far from home but it's really difficult to get a good look at while going past...

So, you're saying you wouldn't want some rare variegated stiltgrass in exchange for, oh I don't know, some of that 'Harbin' maybe?

Variegated Bamboo Grass

I found this just a few feet from my front door at the base of an elephant ear. I have a lot of this grass around. Not 100% sure on the id but I think that it is Microstegium vimineum, called "Bamboo Grass" and "Japanese Stiltgrass". I was hoping it would be a perennial, but it ...

Re: One of the branches showing more variegation...

Very interesting. I would love to see it.
However, randomly striped plants generally don't tissue culture.

I wonder what would happen if you tried to graft a segment of culm to a piece of rhizome....
Just thinking out loud here....

That makes a lot of since, Dependable.

And, yeah, I think you're right about it being bisettii. Seems that people were confusing prominens and bisettii there for a moment.

I wasn't familiar with 'Pistachio'. That is a homeotic mutation. Pretty neat!

Are you familiar with with the 'Nigra' cultivar that has black stems?

So many plants, so little time and money....and acreage.

Re: Mahonia 'Soft Touch'- I think I'm in love. And Weigela.

Yeah, Sambucus is pretty cool. I planted some at a property 9 or 10 years ago. A dark leafed one and I think a gold foliaged one as well. Don't remember the cultivar names. I think I just moved before they had a chance to do much. Or, maybe they didn't like where I put them? Don't remember the speci...

I'm glad someone else shares my enthusiasm about this plant! I just wish it got a bit bigger. And it could be a tad hardier for the sake of security.

Re: simonii?

Interesting, Dependable. I didn't know that bamboos grew in that order. How high would you say your tallest culms are now? And could the change be attributed to a change in fertilization habits? I was actually trying to read some old prominens threads last night, and I actually came across you givin...

Re: simonii?

I'd be thrilled with 5-8 ft at this point, even though I was expecting (what?)16. Mine gets decent sun too. One of the sunnier spots in my yard. I would dedicate the space to something much larger except its pretty cramped and dangerously close to my septic system. I don't understand why your's gets...
