Kicking over shoots
I tell ya. It is wonderful feeling when your grove reaches the point that you can walk through it kicking over shoots that you don't like. Before, I was out there every day obsessing over every shoot. Now? Whatever! Goodbye!

OK thanks. With that I'm pretty sure it's YG.

What looks like YG, but shoots before bissettii (and YG)?
I have a stand of what I thought was Yellow Grove (YG), but is it is shooting now and my bissetti hasn't even started. Bissettii has always been my first with YG following after. Is there a boo that looks like YG that shoots earlier than bissetti? Or can a stand of more mature YG (which this is) sho...

Re: Bamboo in Wood Chip Berm
I'd cover it with dirt. Then you would have a most excellent hugelkultur bed. After a point you would probably not ever have to water it. I think they say 6' of wood is the minimum for a self-sustaining bed, but you are close. Hugelkultur would work really well in your dry environment.

Re: which 2 or 3 should I add for poles/fodder/edible shoots
Privet's the best thing you have going for winter goat forage. Bamboo will be higher maintenance (you have to cut it) and it will dry out fast. My goats didn't touch it after a day, but of course they were spoiled. So I'd only consider bamboo as a supplement to privet, not a substitute. Privet's a g...

The guy did such a hack job digging the clump that both shoots have now aborted.

Re: Bamboo Thief
Is it obvious to everyone that it's your land? It might have looked to be on public land. If bamboo or anything runs into public land it's free game, since at that point it ends up just costing the city money to control it. And I see home owners actually plant stuff all the time on public land thin...

Re: Bamboo Thief
It's not a big deal at all. Just aggravating because it's been so much work to get the area covered with bamboo in a very challenging environment. The one thing I can't get out of my head is a grownup speeding away in a car; he knew he was doing wrong. If he had just asked me, I would have found som...

Bamboo Thief
Anyone ever have problems with bamboo thieves? A few months ago someone cut 10-15 culms from my grove alongside the road. If it was a mature grove I wouldn't care. I do care, though, when 2 culms from a 3 culm planting are cut, which he did. A week ago my cat came inside and indicated that something...

Re: Uphill vs Downhill advance of running Bamboo
It is easier to keep watered at the bottom of a berm or hill. The rhizomes will eventually go everywhere. All things being equal, down hill takes longer as the rhizomes are more likely to grow out into the air and become whip shoots. I wonder how steep a grade has to get for whipping to be a proble...

Re: Uphill vs Downhill advance of running Bamboo
I think uphill/downhill is irrelevant. As well as compass direction. I have some bissettii planted near a road that I thought would have the strongest growth south towards the road and more sunlight, but its strongest growth is north into a more shaded area. I am now of the mind that the strongest i...

Re: Boo-Shoots for 2015
My bissettii is coming on strong; re-leafing after significant winter burn and lots of new shoots. Before this started I took 5 divisions from the area where the county mows, and now shoots are coming up there (which I expected would happen). They'll get mowed late summer or fall, so I plan to let t...

Re: Confused by this Aurea?
I think culms and leaves are darker in heavily shaded boo. So the 'green' you see may just be a dark yellow.
